I moved to Athens, Georgia and attended Patty Hilsman Middle School and Cedar Shoals High School, then we moved to Evans, Georgia in 1977.

Some of the different ways of saying things were pretty amusing.

Up north the bullies always said I'm about to punch you in the nose whereas down south the bullies say I'm fixin' to hit you upside your head.

When I almost got arrested for marijuana posession, the cops said "he has the fixin's" (paraphernalia). I escaped the bust, btw. I stuck a 4-fingered bag of pot in the crotch of my underwear..

You are correct. But some country accents carry southern colloquialisms with them, and those are disappearing, as well, and being replaced by more northern words/phrases and pop culture words/phrases.

My young nieces grew up in the country in a southern household. When they started school, much of their accents went away, and "mama" and "daddy" became "mom" and "dad," or in some cases being addressed by first names-which carried swift rebuke. Their manners also slipped, but that was remedied.

It's a combination of migration and mass media, and it's sad to see it go.

I am born and raised in the south. I agree the dialect accent has homogenized. Several factors I think.

1. Large numbers of people from other regions moving to the south.

2. Large immigrant population.

3. better education

4. Better access to mass media.

5. better healthcare.

You see the same thing in the UK. You almost never see some of the traditional accents like cockney any more. Hell in London, you hardly notice an accent sometimes. All for the same reasons above.
