The mormons have tried very hard to repair their image after their early teachings on blacks. Same with polygamy. They will tell you today that they have a membership of around 500,000 blacks in their faith.
What they don't tell you is that most of those people live in very poor parts of Africa or the Caribbean. So you have to take it with a grain of salt. A lot of those people will tell you they believe in the divinity of a golden dog turd if it meant they get a good meal.

Saying Mormons are Christians is the same as saying Christians are Jews.
There is nothing Christian about the book of Mormon.

if you ask Mormons - yes they call themselves christians
not sure on the offical stance of the vatican, southern bapt. convension, weslyian orgs but i would assume that they consider mormonism a cult

As I remember, the polygamy came a few years after its founding and he claimed he had a revelation that elders were allowed to have multiple wives. I think while they were settled in Illinois, after being chased out of New Hampshire. They soon got chased out of Illinois into Missouri, then on to Utah. Even folks in the 1800's recognized them for the cult they were.
I read a really fascinating book half Joseph Smith biography, and half Mormon church history a few years ago. Wish I could remember the name of it. I'll try to remember the title for those interested.

That's correct. In the 1925 book The Christ of the Indian Road, E. Stanley Jones asked Gandhi how it would be possible to bring India to Christ. Gandhi replied,

The problem is that Christians are people, human, fallible people. Only God is perfect. The rest of us have to suffer with our best attempts to be Christlike, which is about as close to impossible to do as you can imagine.
Now, do all Christians try to emulate Christ in every aspect of their lives. No, and that is another part of the problem. But there are those that do, but they don't get much attention. The only one I know that did is Billy Graham.

The Grahams, Billy and his son Franklin, represent a great example of what has happened to Christianity in this country. Billy Graham was, essentially, apolitical and did his work in the name of Christ. I never met a person who disliked him.
His career was devoted to offering the Word of Christ. I can't remember Billy Graham ever condemning anyone who didn't pay heed to his messages.
Franklin Graham, on the other hand, is a foaming-at-the-mouth politically right-wing agitator who embraces politics and is more than happy to condemn anyone who disagrees with his messages. He is as polarizing as any left- or right-wing fanatic.
I hate the mixing of religion and politics. The outcome is always hateful and demeaning towards someone or group. It's awful.

There is still some nuance to salvation even amongst other Christians, even within Protestant denominations. As an example, some believe in predestination and others do not. Applying faith in Christ alone as the measuring stick for Christianity is basically saying what I believe is the only thing that can academically be called Christianity because it is what I believe and therefore correct.
The OP should be clarified on whether academically Mormons qualify as Christians or if it is your religious belief that they qualify. Westerners look at the different Muslim groups as all Muslims but they have very different opinions of one another based on beliefs they deem heretical.

I think it depends on how you define "Christian". If you define it more in the evangelical term, then no they wouldn't be. If you define it more broad, yes they would be.
Although people would be a lot better off focusing less on the specific "denomination" or "sect" and start focusing on the love behind the religion, but that's just my opinion.

Agreed, it is amusing how many "Christians" have no clue what that means. Or in other words being Christlike but spend there days spewing hate. It's quite interesting to read and view the hypocrisy.
