Anyone Live in Vegas or has lived in Vegas?

I'm wondering what to expect. I bought a house here in Missouri three weeks ago and about 2 weeks ago got a job offer I could not refuse and I'm moving out to Vegas.
I've never been, let alone live there, so I don't know what to really expect. I know there are two sides of Vegas but am curious what the non strip side of Vegas is like.

My friend lives out there, for the past 15 years. He manages clubs. Not sure how the real estate market is now, but a few years ago it was a buyers and renters market out there. He purchased, what would probably be a million dollar home in Atl for 500k.
When Ive been with him out and about to locals restaurants, bars, etc.. they were pretty expensive and staff always expected big tips from locals. He works pretty much a continuous shift throughout the day(9-12, sleep, 4-8, sleep, 10-6:30, sleep), with sleep mixed in here and there, 6 days a week. So I dont think he really does much. I am sure your job would be different.
Another friend lived out there for about 10 years, he lived in the residence portion of a few different casino/hotels and loved it.

The bad:
We have 3 seasons - hot, cold, and windy. Hot seasons usually start in June and last through September. It got up to 116 or so this week. But it's a "dry heat!" Ha!!
Be careful with your dog and cats. We have coyotes and bobcats that'll snag them out of your yard.
Don't drink on the strip. Waaaaay too expensive.
Most of the bars off strip are gaming bars. Lots of people that just go to gamble and get pissed when you get rowdy. In fact gambling machines are everywhere including gas stations, pharmacies, and grocery stores.
The good:
No state income tax.
College football starts at 9 am and the prime time games are finished by 8:30ish leaving you the rest of the night to go out.

Lived in Vegas and this was a solid post. If you want to gamble, go to station casinos.
The youth are little arse hats and I'm sure it's not as much of a "howdy neighbor" atmosphere as you might be used to.
The shows are badass, though.
Also, golf courses.
Don't live in North Vegas.
Like said above, football games as early as 9am is amazing... vastly under rated.

Like teamjackson said, stay always from north Las Vegas although far, far CNLV and Vegas are booming.
Downtown Vegas is making a comeback. Lots of good bars and eateries and a few high rise condos.
Henderson and SW Vegas (mountains edge) are booming. It's seems to be a sellers market now. Seems hard to get a good deal on a pre-owned home if your financing. Lots of cash investors swoop in and pay cash.
Driving to/from California is a pain in the arse. I-15 is 3 lanes to the CA line and then it's 2 lanes all the way to Barstow. And Californians drive like shite.
Vegas really should be in the mountain time zone as it starts to get light around 5:30 am in the summer and it's dark by 4:30 pm in the winter.
Once you get use to it the desert is quite beautiful. But you'll miss the greenery.

Well when you have a gambling problem like I do you don't go to casinos and gamble for the 'free' drinks!! :)
Having said that, if you're go to club and like to drink then get bottle service if it's reasonable ($150 or so). My last 3 bar tabs were over $300 for 2 people!!

Hey guys, thanks for all the informative posts. From what I hear, it's going to be a lot better than living in Missouri in most aspects of living.
Also, SouthernBuck.... you want to switch to solar energy :) haha

I cannot speak to living in Vegas, but I've been there on two company trips, and worked for another company that had a Vegas office.
From what I've been told, it's incredibly affordable.
From what I've observed, you're truly alone in the middle of a bigass desert.
I think I'd love it, but I'm in love with the sight of red rock formations.
