Acadian Driftwood

If you'd had told me that chorus was by the Grateful Dead, I'd probably have believed it.

I think I've posted it before (hopefully not ITT), but this has always been my favorite song from The Band:

When I Paint My Masterpiece
The Band
Cahoots

Love well-written lyrics, and it's hard to go wrong with Dylan (especially when it's sung by someone else).

I Shall Be Released
The Band
Music from Big Pink

Like this one? Of course, another Dylan-penned tune.

Richard Manual's vocals on this are awesome to me. It sounds like a man who has reached his mental end with the world and is standing on the edge of a high cliff staring over the edge and down into a dark, wooded valley below wondering if stepping off of the precipice and into the void would be the release from his troubles that he thinks it might be.

Love it, man.

I actually intended to use that song for the first ML post above, but then found the other video with the Levon intro and thought it was somehow poignant.

One of my favorites too, but boy, you've really got to be in the right place to listen to it.

Check out some of the names performing in this version (which honestly doesn't sound the best, but damn that's a lineup).

Another good one of theirs:

Dang, that's awesome man. Had no idea there was an Arkansas connection there.

Yeah-that's a helluva a line up from The Last Waltz.

We'd get bent out of shape in college and blare this. Of course, later in life after probably living that party life longer than I should have, it took on a different meaning.

You didn't know that Levon was from Arkansas?

From Wiki:

quote:

Born Mark Lavon Helm in Elaine, Arkansas, Helm grew up in Turkey Scratch, a hamlet of Marvell, Arkansas. His parents, Nell and Diamond Helm, were cotton farmers who shared a strong affinity for music. They encouraged their children to play and sing at a young age.

Ashamed to admit it, but no.

This seems like something I probably did know at some point and forgot, because he was the only American in the group, right?

No wonder he was so good — he got dat Hawg in’em.
