Come on, the Stones and Who are vastly overrated.

Have to disagree with you on that, particularly The Who, never been much of a Stones fan.

You are jaded by some unfounded hate.

All of those bands are deserving of their accolades. I am not the biggest stones fan compared with the others but I also won't sit here and say they weren't very talented and a huge cultural phenomenon.

The Who, maybe only where Townsend is concerned. He is absolutely not the incredible guitarist people have made him out to be over the years. A good showman on guitar? Yes; an elite guitarist? No. However, Roger Daltrey is top 3 best frontmen of all time, & makes Plant look like a chump. And their music, its longevity & influence, speaks for itself, not to mention their creativity. ...
It is impossible to overrate the Stones & their music, or overstate their popularity & their influence. Not many bands can sell out the biggest venues in the world multiple times, and as senior citizens, no less, and have the massive portfolio of hits to play for over three hours straight, with crowds begging for more. I saw them in the Superdome for their Voodoo Lounge tour in the mid 90s. There are no words to adequately describe their brilliance. They, along with the Beatles, are the most important rock band of all time, imo. ... And all 3 - Beatles, Stones, & The Who - are infinitely better than Zeppelin.

Totally agree. You could argue which of those 3 is the greatest, but they are all easily better than LZ.

Of those four Beatles, LZ, Who, stones, in that orders.

... Hate is a bit strong, but for Robert Plant, maybe, who imo thinks much too highly of himself & was a hindrance to some pretty good musicians. ... There's no denying Bonham's, Page's, & Jones's talent, and they have a couple of songs that I like, but overall, Zeppelin's music is just simply overrated. They've always had their group of followers & always will, and much of it is due more to the culture of the era they represent than their music itself. It's also well-known that they did blatantly rip off songs from other artists, and I tend not to consider bands who do that as GOAT category.

I think you are off base about it not being about the music, they put our some of the all time great albums IMO.
they were the ultimate rock stars, which adds a bit of an aura. That isn't anything the stones didn't do as well - play up their "bad bay" image to gain more traction. But LZ had a profound impact on the landscape of the music industry moving forward.

Well, music is extremely subjective, which is what makes it so difficult to "judge" unless it's just based on technical talent, ability, & performance. It would be boring as frick if everyone liked the same thing or if there wasn't such diversity in music itself.

I always was a quality over quantity sort of guy, and IMO, lead zeplin couldn't even tote rare earths jockstrap. They got me through the worst 7 years of my life, college.

95% of LZ's songs were stolen from other bands.

I'm rare earthin' right now, what is a jimmy, one of those spinning things?

Yep ... There just aren't words for the all kinds of pathetic. Jesus Christ, I'd slit my wrists if that's all I had to live for. ... Oh well, glad it's not me. ... I'm gonna see about the spinning deal & talk to a couple of folks. Gotta finish food, too. Heads up in a bit.

Go smoke a joint and listen to one of their 10 minute masterpieces that wasn't stolen, like " In my time of dying"
I don't give a frick what they copied, mimicked, heard and liked then integrated, because they are blaringly the best band to come out of that era and it isn't close.
RIP John Bonham

quote:That was kinda my point earlier. ... I was the designated "roller" among my friends back in the day just bc I didn't smoke; it had an adverse effect on me. HOWEVER, the exception was when some of my friends insisted on listening to said Zeppelin 10 min. "masterpiece," so I had to take a couple of hits to get through it without getting a migraine.
Go smoke a joint and listen to one of their 10 minute masterpieces ...
But just to be clear, I don't think Zeppelin is one of tGOATs, but I do think there are much worse, particularly comparing today's "music." There's no doubt I had rather my son listen to Zeppelin than 95% of the garbage that is considered "music" by today's standards. As a matter of fact, all he listens to is late 60s, 70s, 80s, & a few 90s bands, thanks to SiriusXM & my insistence that the noise that is popular today is not real music.
