The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill that would allow people to carry a concealed handgun without a permit.

The committee voted 6-3 for the bill Wednesday after a fiery public hearing in which some state sheriffs spoke both against and in favor of the bill. The bill by Republican Sen. Gerald Allen now moves to the Senate floor.

State Senator Tom Whatley (R-District 27) of Auburn was one of the six who voted in favor of the bill. Whatley said that folks can still apply for permits if they are worried about reciprocity in other states. Whatley also added that this bill would strengthen Second Amendment rights.

The current gun laws in AL are retarded and needed to be changed. They did take a giant leap with this though

You need a permit from your local sheriffs office just to have a gun and ammo, any where in the cabin of your car, not locked up.

its been a money grab from the sheriffs for a long time

That.

And each county sets their own price on a permit. It's about funding LEO. Not about "danger" or keeping guns out of the wrong hands. I fully support not having to have a CC permit to carry concealed, and am ok with a nominal fee for one if you wish to have one so that you can carry in reciprocity with other states.

Hopefully, national CC will pass, as it's being pushed now.

Why should you need a license for a Constitutionally guaranteed right?

So essentially you think there should be less gun education?

Do you seriously believe CC has anything to do with gun education? It's 100% about revenue for local Sheriff's.

I would however prefer more firearm education. Like, perhaps, have it taught in schools. Like it used to be.. way back when.

Yes, I seriously do since that can be the only source of firearm education for some.

You would be fine for it in public schools funded with tax money but are against paying a fee for a permit? Idk what the fees are in other states, but I paid a very reasonable fee to get a CC in Tennessee.

I'm pretty damn pro 2nd amendment, but I've yet to see concealed carry addressed anywhere in that text.

My CC in Kentucky was $85. That included 4 hours of education and 2 hours of instruction on the gun range.

When I lived in Georgia, my CC cost $25. I filled out an application, was finger printed and got my CC in the mail six weeks later.

I like Kentucky's approach better, I think.

I agree. If anything, I would be open to more education for these courses. As someone who grew up around guns and still enjoy them quite a bit, I want people to be more educated, not the opposite. I don't give a shite that the government (at some level) runs these programs, people make money off of services--this is America and we have to make a living.

More educated gun owners are better for those who argue for gun rights.

I would be perfectly fine with teaching firearm safety and ones Constitutional Rights in a school setting.

Paying a fee to the State to exercise that Right is absurd. And education is not a part of receiving a CC permit in many states. Most are becomi,g shall issue states and its simply about taking revenue in.

I'm not really siding with one or the other but in some states (such as MS) you can get a concealed carry permit without demonstrating any firearms knowledge whatsoever. As long as you aren't a heinous criminal and full out the paperwork you are good to go

How are licenses and gun education related? All I do is pay a fee, they do a background check and I have a license.

I learned nothing about guns in the process.
