ARLINGTON — A protein bar and a little affection were all two Arlington police officers needed to coax the muscular, menacing-looking suspect off the streets and into the back of their patrol car.

Because of their thoughtful actions, Jeffery, a white pit pull (and the so-called suspect) has been reunited with his owner and the officers are being widely praised through social media.

Pits get a bad reputation. They are incredibly loving and loyal dogs.

Pussies. They're supposed to shoot on sight.

To their owners, yes. For the random kids in backyards, or dogs in their paths, no. They aren't innately kind animals like you see in most dogs, except to the owner. Which is why you always see a confused look on the face of the pit bull defenders when their dogs go and do something horrific.

Don't like pits. Also, if you own a pit, you might be a redneck.

if you own a pit and let it get out of your house and yard then you are trashy and irresponsible. Very few pit owners aren't trash

I thought all pits were pretty bad but we had a neighbor get one. At first we were freaked out, but she turned out to be the sweetest dog I've ever been around.

Completely threw me for a loop, the neighbors were pretty rough on her, but she would run up toy kids if she was out and roll over and let them bounce on her, do whatever. Changed my opinion on them.

I used to think walking in bad neighborhoods at 2 am was a bad idea. Then one day I did it and didn't see a single person. Completely changed my opinion on it. Now I feel like I could do it whenever I want with no problem.

until it decides to eat your dog or a kid one day, all pits start off as playful until they see a good kid steak

That's a stupid analogy

I'm just saying I had an opinion that all pit bulls were bad.

Then I met a pit bull that was not at all. That doesn't mean I think they are all good, but to assume they are all bad is incorrect.

I would still never keep one in my home.

Not all pits will attack.

All of them are capable of killing small children and dogs in one bite. They were bred to be aggressive and deadly to protect. If you live in the woods, not a bad animal. But in a suburb, they shouldn't be allowed.

My thoughts as well. I would never own one, but I've seen plenty of nice ones in my line of work.

I thought small dogs and kids were a natural part of a pit bulls diet...

This board is a constant battle between cop haters and cop defenders. All threads on both sides always have to do with dogs.

The dog I had as a kid was a pit. We got her as a puppy and she was black, so she was advertised as a "black lab mix." After about a year it was clear that she wasn't a lab when her snout rounded into shape and she didn't grow past 50 lbs.

I know one dog isn't a representative sample, but she was the least aggressive, most loving dog I've ever been around. Never had any issues with her (although she did kill several squirrels and ducks that wandered into our yard).

No it's pretty solid.

Not the dog to neighborhood part, but the basing your opinion on one example part.

So do you submit that all put bulls are aggressive and will harm humans under the right circumstances?

No, but I don't like dealing in absolutes. I will submit that MOST are aggressive, due to their genetics of being bred that way.

Thus the stereotypes and unfavorable opinions.
