I encourage you to not let your 'diagnosis' of being wheelchair bound by 40 be what you believe. If you believe it, more than likely it will come true. Do not quit just because some doctor said it, there may come a time when you are - but maybe not. Keep moving.

I was disabled by a man driving too fast in the rain, he hydroplaned and hit me (and my two sons) head on. I was told in the ER by the surgeon that he 'didn't know if he could save my leg.' I did wake up with it still there. I was told later that I 'should have died two different times.' I'm still here. It's been a struggle but I am walking, not without some discomfort and effort, but thankful to be up and walking. I know if I quit walking because of the effort it takes, well, then I will be through walking and in a chair myself which I admit would be easier.

Keep fighting, my friend.

They make up 90% of the people riding on the motorized shopping carts too... taking them away from the actual elderly and disabled.

These people bother me. Their 300 plus pounds of fat rolls spilling over the seat is so gross.

Not much makes me more angry than people who abuse the privilege of the handicapped pass.

I see it more often than I would ever thing, mostly at walmart and restaurants.

The sad thing is that those same people are abusing the social security disability program, Medicaid and Medicare, food stamps and any other government program that they can.

I firmly believe that government should not be involved with any welfare programs for this very reason. Private welfare programs would police against abuse much more efficiently.

Hopefully we'll elect Rand Paul in 2016 and begin welfare reform.

You'd get really, really pissed if you knew how easy it is to get a disability check for a child that has ADHD in some cases.

I've had parents get incredibly pissed when teachers fill out the forms regarding the student's behavior in class and it isn't "bad enough" for them to get a check.

I'm going to be more respectful of you in the future in our pseudo NWA vs rest of the state debates. I admire your spirit and tenacity.

I always park a good ways from the door walking an extra 30 yards is not in any way a problem for me. At my office we've consolidated some locations and our parking close to the building fills up and the church next door lets us use their lot for overfill. We have a number of older people working there that have put in decades of service to the company and have health issues. I arrive at the office an hour earlier than most everyone else and I choose to park the in the furthest part of the overfill even though I could get a spot by any of the doors since few people are there when I am. The extra 30-40 seconds of walk time is only an inconvenience when it's raining and the slope of the lots make for a fun time when we have ice covering the lots in the winter.

I've never understood why able bodied people would even consider using a handicap spot.

I agree with this. There was a time that churches and other social service entities handled things like this, and it wasn't just a perpetual government handout. We need to get back there.

Yep. My wife deals with this all the time, and I think both Doctors and School Administrators don't want to hear parents complain, so they just give them what they want even if they don't really need it.

Good luck to you.

I'm a bit passionate about this topic myself because my parents were both handicapped and both could walk, but with lots of difficulty in their later years in life. It took years for them to get a handicapped pass for their vehicles.

It's really tough for me to watch people park in handicapped spaces who have no obvious disability that would require them to park there. I'm sure in some situations, there are folks who look perfectly healthy who need that, but mostly it looks like it's being abused.

There is no profit in any welfare program.

That's why it would never work as a private industry.

2. People who are blessed in mass are that way because of genetics. Their bodies simply aren't engineered to run the way that smaller people's bodies are and society should alter itself to accommodate them.

Genetics have nothing to do with them be complete fat asses! Their fat bodies aren't designed to shove pizza, candy, junk food down it 24/7 either, which is why they are packing on fat.

Another problem, are the doctors! My aunt is 5'6 and weights close to 180lbs and she said that her Dr told her that she was in good health and that she didn't need to lose weight. I love my aunt, but damn she is fat and DOES need to lose atleast 40-50 lbs. To be a Dr and tell her that she is in good health is complete bullshite.

Um, no. At no point in history did being a 300+ lb blob provide any sort of evolutionary advantage, and as such no genes were ever created and passed down to share this "trait".

The rate of obesity in undeveloped countries is virtually non-existent. The only place it exists is in developed countries where people can overeat and under-exercise with relative ease.

There's a niche called non-profits that operates for the welfare of those who need their services. They distribute their services very efficiently.

In effect, the government is in competition with them. Imagine how gigantic the non-profit sector would be if there were no government welfare programs.

I see totally ripped guys at the gym parking in handicap spaces. I just guess that they got them from a family member or something because they have absolutely no problems with mobility.

I live in a fairly obese town and see HC space abuse pretty regularly, though it's not like I poll people as to why they have a permit.

I think it would be fun to get a fake police badge and come up and ask people why they're using the space when they absolutely can walk just fine. That's a $100 fine

Many of the so-called non-profits have very high administrative expenses and give out very little.

Most non-profits operate very efficiently and help out a lot in their communities.
