There were a couple of times when we made weekend lake plans and ended up being stuck with a full condo bill that was supposed to be evenly split

I learned never wait to split the bill when you go. You get the money up front and make it clear that if they bail they don't get it back unless you find a replacement group.

We have noticed that our foreign friends have never once flaked on us, and neither have the friends we have who are 40+.

So now you're starting to figure it out...

Yeah, it's just the nature of people now. They're very self-centered. We've only had 1 couple do this a few times, so we proceeded to just ignore them now.

Sounds like you need better friends.

This. frick'em. You don't want flakes as friends, anyway. Commitments, no matter how small, mean something.

You sound like a blast to be friends with. My friends, and girlfriend's friends, hang out at the very least weekly, if not 2-3 times a week. If any of them were as high maintenance as you I'd bail on them too. Different strokes.
