Don't do Destin proper unless you want to hang at Branson on the beach. Go a little further east to 30A. Much more charming. Look into Seaside, Grayton Beach, Seagrove, or if you've got the money, Rosemary Beach.

This, all of this..

Gulf Shores isn't bad, but the beaches and water are NOTHING compared to the Destin/30A area which have some of the bluest waters and whitest sand in the world.

Here's a nice resource for visiting 30A. I'd be happy to give you recommendations on eating and such if you end up choosing that area. My family has been going down to that general area for around 25 years.

All of this.

I'm just not a fan of 30A. When I go to the beach I want to be in a house on the beach. I want to open the door and hear the waves and watch dolphins swim by.

Last year we went to St George Island (Apalachicola) and really enjoyed it. It is out of the way and not close to anything but Apalachicola. If you want bars and night life, St George is not for you. If you want to be in a house that is right on the beach and have a nice quiet time with your family without crowds you've chosen wisely.

The whole week we were there (Oct) we would only see 3-10 families on the beach.

I do however want to visit the Charleston area as I've never been there.

Meh. There aren't a whole lot of bars or nightlife on 30A. It's mostly families vacationing there. As far as being on the beach, from our condo we walk about 30 seconds and we're right on the beach.

It's all about when you go to 30A. I've found that the best time to go, if you don't want crowds, is in September or late October. We make it down there multiple times every year and we've been during every season.

Hush your mouth about SGI!

Everyone needs to keep going to Destin and 30A.

In all seriousness, there are definitely still places you can get that sort of beach front experiences in 30A, but you're right that SGI is much more remote and "wild" than 30A, which has gotten increasingly built up and over populated. I think we've probably talked about this before, but my family has been going to the Panhandle area for over 40 years. We used to go to Ft. Morgan because we owned a house out there that got wiped by hurricane Frederic. Then we started doing Destin because of the sand and blue water. Then that got too overcrowded, so we started going to 30A. Now 30A is getting too overcrowded and we're looking at the St. George Island.

All that being said, I really like to eat at good restaurants, and while Apalachicola has some great food, it doesn't have the same food "scene" as 30A.

Gulf Shores/Orange Beach or Destin/Ft. Walton, you can't go wrong with either of those. The sand is nicer there than anywhere on the east coast.

You could just go to The Cloister on Sea Island.

Love that place. And love Fairhope. Now I'm suddenly craving Panini Pete's and Big Daddy's.
