3-4 Day vacation in Southeast?

Thought this could be decent place to ask. Looking to take the wife somewhere for a few days at the end of May. Sun and beach preferred. We've never been anywhere in the southeast. Thinking Charleston, somewhere in Fl, gulf shores? Appreciate any opinions.

I've been to Gulf Shores for Hangout Fest and that was awesome. Destin with family which was also nice.

Charleston to Savannah. The coast and straight up old South. Would be a great "southern" vacation.
Gulf Shores is cool and all but it doesn't strike me as "southern" and I spent practically every summer of my youth there.

Hangout is a badass festival

I usually go to the Orange Beach/Gulf Shores area. I don't think it's a huge spot for the college crowd except for the Hangout Festival. Kind of the opposite of Panama City Beach. Some good golf courses nearby, good seafood places, easy to get a boat to go fishing, etc.

If you're looking for more of a "southern" type trip, then go east coast of Georgia.
If not, definitely stay on the gulf coast and avoid Panama City. Destin and Gulf Shores are probably the best.

Charleston if you enjoy history.
Savannah is another option.

Sullivan's Island, SC or Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL

To sum up the suggestions:
If you want a southern vacation that involves the beach, the Georgia coast up through South Carolina is for you.
If you really just want to go to the beach, Gulf Shores to Destin is what you want.

What are beach options close to charleston? How's the water this time of year? Thanks for all the replies.

Don't do Destin proper unless you want to hang at Branson on the beach. Go a little further east to 30A. Much more charming. Look into Seaside, Grayton Beach, Seagrove, or if you've got the money, Rosemary Beach. Last few weeks in May are good because the post-school summer rush hasn't really started yet.
Gulf Shores isn't bad, but the beaches and water are NOTHING compared to the Destin/30A area which have some of the bluest waters and whitest sand in the world.
Here's a nice resource for visiting 30A. I'd be happy to give you recommendations on eating and such if you end up choosing that area. My family has been going down to that general area for around 25 years.

As others have said, if you just want to go to the beach, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach/Destin are your best bets.
If you want the true old south experience, either Savannah or Charleston. If you go to Savannah, you can stay at Tybee Island and use that as the beach. Our favorite is Charleston - went for our honeymoon, have been back for two anniversaries and are going there for a week in June. Stay either at Sullivan's Island or Isle of Palms. We use Island Realty for condos on Isle of Palms. Right on the beach, very nice units. Water temps at the end of May/first of June would be 75-77 or so.

I'm from Charleston, if you wanna check stuff out go there. If you just wanna kick back relax and enjoy the beach go to pawleys Island about 60-70 miles north of Charleston.

The water is awesome. Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, and Isle of Palms are all great beach locations.
But there's a helluva lot more to do in Charleston than just sit on the beach. It's an awesome place to visit.

I like the Charleston to Savannah idea. You could swing by Kiawah Island or Hilton Head for great beach options. Never been north of Charleston. I would go to Charleston, then stay somewhere like Kiawah or Hilton Head and maybe do a day trip to Savannah.
If you go to Savannah you don't want to miss Mrs. Wilkes Restaurant for the best Southern cooking you could ever eat.
