285 is a problem even when it's not rush hour though. No one knows that the left lanes are the fast lanes and the right lanes are the slow lanes, so you have people going different speeds in every lane. So frustrating

Yes it's very frustrating especially when your in A semi

I spent 4 years in Atl. 285 is rough, but nothing special for a big city at all.
I currently live 19 miles from my office. If I leave at 7:30am, it takes an hour and 10 minutes to go 19 miles. If I leave at 8:30am, it takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Afternoon rush hour starts at 3:30pm on 95 and ends between 7pm and 7:30.

Because it's always under construction.
285 is awful

it was built for the atlanta population of 50+ years ago. The major interchanges are poorly designed and create vicious bottlenecks. 285/75 and 285/20 interchanges on the N/W side are awful. at one point the lanes merge to 2 lanes. hahaha

Ummmmm not real sure what you expected. Atlanta is widely known as one of the worst traffic cities in America and you're surprised it's terrible at 4:30?

I remember going to atl for the WVU game and thinking we left home at a good time but didn't realize that leaving at 2 would mean being in ATL traffic near the peak of rush hour on a friday trying to get to the Westin on Peachtree....sat on 85/20 interchange for probably a good hour to go maybe 3 miles to a reservation that didn't even exist.

Yeeeaaahhhh that's 3 eastern so you got to ATL right around 4:30 as well...on a Friday.
C'mon people! If you're trying to navigate ATL interstates between 7-10am or 3-7pm you're gonna have a bad time.

Move in-town and you only have to use the top end connector 5-10% of the time.
75/85 in the mornings sucks, but it nothing compared to 400 or 285. The top end connector has to be one of the 10 worst commutes in the country. If you have to drive around the top end then get on 400 and go north I honestly don't understand how you stay sane.
Solution : live ITP and go against the grain to get out in the morning and to come in at night.

pretty sure the left lane is for ludicrous speed and the right lane is simply for hauling arse. Because if it's not bumper to bumper and you aren't driving nearly 90 then you're gonna get run the frick over. At least that was my experience when I lived in Gwinnett

Pretty much. They actually just raised all the speed limits ITP to 65 and 285 has a traffic based speed limit from 35-65 now.

When I lived in Atlanta and wanted to head home to Alabama for the weekend, if I couldn't leave at 3, I just waited until 8 Friday night to leave. Living off 75 in Cobb County and having to come down 285 to the 20 interchange was awful getting on 20 West.
I rode my bike to work mostly so never really had to deal with traffic otherwise.
True story, wife and I drove separate cars through Atlanta last year on our way to the NC mountains. We always just stay on 20, hit the Connector north to 85 north. Well I missed the Connector exit not paying attention, and she did. I decided to just go all the way to 285 on the east end and head north. I ended up being 20 minutes ahead of her when we tried to hook back up near Suwanee.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. I was coming down from Sandy Springs on 400. I was going to get on 85N (which you can do now) to get off on N Druid Hills. I was listening to the radio and thinking about something and just totally blanked out and stayed with traffic to get on 85S. I looked up, freaked out, then looked at my google maps. It added 38 minutes to my ride. 38 minutes. Just for missing one turn. I had to drive all the way to the connector, go up 75N to Northside, turn around, sit in more traffic then get back up 85N.

We're in Decatur and my clients are all over the place. The commutes aren't perfect but I've never had a typical Cumming - Buckhead down 400 70 minute commute. I couldn't survive it mentally.

Spaghetti Junction is the worst.
I'm in south Georgia for the weekend. There is no traffic here.
