I agree. Pass protect got a little better and so did run blocking as the year went on. Need more.

1. This should be DE, but it's not. We'll have players here. I think Harris will come into his own this year. So I'll go with playmakers. We return pretty much no production at WR and also lose our most explosive player in Murphy. I like some of our younger guys but until they do it...

2. QB- Maty simply has to take the next step and become more consistent. It's going to be tough to win without more out of him.

3. OL- I'm not all that concerned here, but we are replacing an NFL tackle and the staff felt the need to bring in two JUCO OL. Hopefully Bauer can take over at LG as well.

I have to think that bad line play early in the season kind of set a bad precedent of Mauk having to be in constant motion. Even as the line improved, he didn't really adapt...almost like he was constantly expecting the line to fall apart and would roll outside of his protection when he should have stepped up and thrown.

Hopefully they get that sorted out in the offseason and Mauk has a line he can be confident with.

I think it's going to be a bad habit to break. It didn't start with last year's OL. Check out his HS highlights and you'll see much of the same.

I've never seen Mauk not scramble, much to my chagrin because he's killed us with his elusiveness.

Scrambling is a big part of his game, and he's great at it...when moving forward.

He had the tendency to run backward or bail to the sideline though which is where he got in trouble.

That's how I see it too. You'll notice most of our posts are self-deterministic. We know what we have coming back and where we need to improve/replace personnel. We aren't worrying about what anybody else is doing. If we execute better we win. Of course that's true for everybody.

Consistency in the East will win it. That's what Mizzou has done the past two years; play more consistently than it's main competition.

I expect the Vols to be improved but a tad inconsistent. Lots of new talent and CBJ has the team moving in the right direction.

With Georgia's returning talent and recruiting they should have won the last two years, but they always seem to lose games they shouldn't. It's befuddling.

It's going to be a fun horse race. Any one of the three could take it, and you never know, maybe the Head Ball Coach will have something to say about it, but I have my doubts. My take is that McElwain is a year or two away, and Kentucky and Vandy just don't seem to have enough horses.

It'll certainly ben fun to watch.

True for 2014 but not 2013. Nobody gives that team it's due, even us. Probably could have won the SEC and played Fstate if Steckel hadn't run that stupid 3-4.

Someone is going to post how wrong you are about the defensive scheme in that game. But I'm not sure who.

It's definitely not gonna be me. I think it's gonna be Tigersessed, but I don't always keep the posters straight.

Wish I could take credit, but that's a Killz original.

Agreed. '13 was a legitimately elite team with NFL talent all over the field. What did us in was inexplicably changing our defensive scheme for one game in Atlanta. We were good enough to win that game, and we were good enough to beat Fla St.

Still chaps my arse.

LOL, nah I try to avoid having the same discussion everyday. In that game, Ian Simon was the extra defender brought in. I'm not sure how he fits in a 3-4 though.

To tie this to the thread topic, I hope Ian Simon gets beat out by one of the talented youngsters as a starter this year.

I hope Mauk shows improvement. I have some concern around the learning curve of Odom's defense. I'm not sure how big my concern should be because I don't know how much he is changing in scheme, responsibilities, or terminology. If there is a learning curve, I hope it is 3 games or less.

You're a better man than me.

And I agree on Simon.

Yeah, we need at least 3 new ones to step up. You could say DE....but we have always had production at DE under GP. That goes back way before Ray/Golden and Sam/Ealy. I suspect by the end of the year next season we won't be concerned too much about the DE position.

Obviously, Mauk has to progress in several areas. Not too concerned about OL-I think that's set to be a strength next year. The only other concern I can see right now is the adjustment to Odom as DC, and how the squad adapts to whatever changes he brings.

Can Maty continue to grow at QB?

This is it for me; if he does, we should be good to go BUT we all know about "bad Maty".

The most explosive offensive player could be our biggest dud. Maty Mauk. No more running around he must hang in the pocket a little longer and find a tall WR
