Crockett looks good, Strong scores a td but later has a fumble.

Leverage on the ball is going to keep him from getting reps. Burkett made a solid fill and contact was eminent. He only had one hand on the ball. Very unfortunate because if he gets into the second level he won't be caught.

I've always liked what Witter brought to the table as a secondary ball carrier. He just cannot slip contact. He gets blasted every once every 5 or 6 carries.

Witter will never be good with contact. Breezes still bowl him over. Wish he were faster or at least had the Hansbrough burst.

Shame to hear Strong still has fumbleitis.

He had the speed and power to not be brought down or caught from behind once he gets into full gear.

I wish Witter was in more of a 3rd down back role. He's better than he gets credit for on here, but he's not one of our 3 most talented ball carriers

I agree that there are backs on the roster with a higher ceiling in terms of big play potential. They will have to show the ability to handle the other assignments and take care of the ball to take snaps from him.

He does have solid value on 3rd down. He had 19 3rd down carries last year and converted 12 of them into 1st downs. In 2013, Josey had 20 3rd down carries converting 12. Washington and Hansbrough are the only primary ball carries that had better numbers on 3rd down over a season and they each had more attempts.

Witter mainly fumbles just before he crosses the goal line

That was his only TO last year. Dumb mistake but it had nothing to do with ball security through contact, which is what matters.

Witter

Easily the best blocking back we have

Witter may not get the carries to get there, but if he goes off and rushes for 1000 yds, he will nudge Hansbrough out at #10 for career rushing yds in the program. That would make for a pretty solid college career.

I dunno; lots of fast corners and safeties in the SEC.

In 2014 Hansbrough had 593 yds on 133 carries and 6 TDs during conference play.

Witter had 496 on 111 carries and 4 TDs last year. He isn't Tony Dorsett but he can be productive in this conference.

Same YPC and two less TDs on 22 fewer carries.

To hit 1000 yds this year he would need 55 more carries than he got last year provided his YPC does not improve. I don't think the carries will be there for him to do it unless he makes a significant improvement in YPC. If his carries per game stay the same and he can hit 6 yds per carry he makes it. I don't know if that is realistic either.

Here's a little more on the scrimmage (some of the same info too).

I like hearing positive news, especially about the D. I hope they continue to improve through camp, and into the SEC opener against SC. We really need to be ready to go for that game.

It's good to read this as well:

quote:

Odom confirmed that center Jonah Dubinski is now on scholarship. The Columbia native started the last two games last season but he’ sin a camp battle with redshirt freshman Trystan Castillo for the starting job. They rotated with the first unit during Saturday’s scrimmage. Sophomore Tre’Vour Simms also got work with the first unit at right guard, where the Tigers return senior starter Adam Ploudre

Simms, Castillo, and Pendleton would be the heaviest interior set in the history of the program.

Attach 270 lb TE Blanton to that line and you have some serious beef up front.

Odom is definitely running out bigger teams than Pinkel did.
