Obviously not anywhere close to where we needed to be last year. Myriad of reasons, but bottom line is it must be MUCH better. BO is a defensive coach and he has to get that side of the ball rolling.

DT- TBJ and Logan seem to be the starters. I'm just hoping, for his sake and ours, that TBJ is not too diminished from his injuries and can have a healthy year. Utsey might not be back from injury. It was paramount to add Brandon, Palmore and Young if for nothing else than depth reasons. Probably the least amount of intrigue here.

DE- Frazier will start. If he plays like he did down the stretch he could be our next high draft pick along the DL. The spot opposite him is wide open. I'd give the early edge to Howard. He's a very good athlete and has experience. Williams and Anderson will also have a chance. Harold adds some depth

LB- I'm going to say Hall, Biesel and Lee start but wouldn't be very surprised if it were 3 completely different guys. Garret, Agbasimere, Burkett and Baldwin could all grab a spot. You also add Miller and Brooks who both look like they could be ready to play. This spot will be interesting. Not sure if you fit Warren here or as a DB but also seems likely he is the nickel.

CB- I'll go with Cheadle and Acy, but would not be surprised if Holmes won a spot either. Stribling and Hines are still here. Alton is coming off a RS. Bring in Petry and Sparks. This is the most concerning spot tbh.

S- Probably the most interesting spot to me. I'm going to say Hilton and Perkins start, but again could be completely different. Wilson and Sherrils have both started and you are also adding Prewett to the mix. Ross is still here and we add 3 FR to the mix.

My projected starters (i.e. My wild arse guess)

Frazier
TBJ
Logan
Howard

Hall
Biesel
Lee

Cheadle
Hilton
Perkins
Acy

Nickel: Warren

Just going off the hire of Brian Odom, my guess is that Mizzou runs more of a 3-4 defense than a 4-3.

Most teams with 2 LB coaches run a 3-4 base.

That's an interesting point, but we don't really have the personnel to run a 3-4.

A good passing team is going to be able to pick our defensive backfield apart, especially on the corners which are weak. LB will be passable but not great. Line will be better than passable but not great. I don't see the athletes to compete with FL and GA right now, much less AL and AU. Looks like a decent middle of the pack defense. We'll see what they come up with. Obviously hope it turns out better than that

I don't think it will exclusively be a 3-4 defense, but I do think Mizzou plays out of a 3-4 more and more.

My personal Gypsy fortuneteller sees 6 wins in our future.

But I admit, two years ago she said Aldon Smith would have a breakout year in 2016 and go on to a long HOF-earning NFL career...and numerous national citizenship awards.

The corners are definitely worrisome. That being said, I like Acy and Holmes. They have a lot of potential and are BIG corners. Light on experience though.

Safety has the potential to be very good though.

If we do have even a middle of the pack defense we have the chance to be pretty damn good.

I'm about right there too. 6 or 7 wins. Eight if things break for us, 5 if they don't.

Also agree with Kilo. Hard to tell right now.

Very disappointed we didn't go after another JUCO corner after we whiffed on the first two we tried to bring in

Sparks and Petry may be able to jump in and play right away. The guy from NFL network that does the film room articles for PM seemed to really like both of them.

I'm looking for a blend of 3-4 Over/ Over Loose and 4-3 Over looks on 1st and 2nd down and 4-2 Over on 3rd.

Beisel and Garrett can play MLB and SAM in the 3-4. They could get singled up on the TE at SAM but they are going to have similar responsibility playing MLB in a 4-3. Baldwin should be ready to provide depth at SAM and Cross has said that Brooks will play. Burkett will factor into this as well but hopefully in a limited role.

Hall can play WLB in either scheme. I hope they move him to the position to rotate with Lee, who needs to take a major step this year. Miller could contribute as well.

The Jack is going to play like a 4-3 DE. Frazier, Howard and Williams provide plenty of depth.

It all depends on disruption with either front and if you aren't causing that, you are getting gashed.

There's a lot of the depth on defense except at corner. A couple guys need to take huge leaps from last year.

Btw, take a look at how deep the o-line is. As deep as I've ever seen it here.

Odom's 3-4 at Memphis was similar to the 49ers' 3-4 in that it was an attacking 3-4, not the typical type with three big linemen clogging things up so linebackers could make plays. Very similar to 4-3 in a lot of ways.

I definitely think we have the personnel to run that. Guys like Frazier and Howard are athletic enough to play OLB in the way Aldon did in SF, which didn't require much coverage responsibilities. It was more about getting after the quarterback and setting the edge against the run. And given the three big juco linemen we signed and the fact that we just hired a second linebackers coach, I think it's very plausible we see something like that next year: a 3-4 with a lot of 4-3 principles.

I also think it's very unlikely that we bring in three juco DT and none of them start.
