This was just posted on PowerMizzou. I couldn't get excited about this happening, but then again what do I know?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Had Lunch yesterday with a member of BOC. We talked business let GP. The interesting comment came when he said that Josh Henson has really won over alot of the members of the BOC. ALOT of the members were not fans of GP hiring Henson, but when their first couple of choices were no longer available.. they eventually approved the Henson Hire... then Not just with what he has done with the offense, but with his conversations with some of them individually. The next comment came as even more of a surprise. He said that if the offense and team remain competitive as there are today, then when GP retires, Henson will have the inside track at the HC job. They LOVE the fact that he is young and connected to the South, and he has been the main guide through the "what it takes to be an SEC Team" forests.

Now that does not mean he gets the job, or he is the heir apparent.. just that he will be taken seriously when the time comes, and will be the first one they talk to.

Time will tell.

Sounds reasonable to me. Keeping their options open, but amenable to company talent.

I think I could get behind this depending on how he does over the next few years as the OC. I would think if he were successful at HC, then he would likely be here for a very long time, which is obviously good for the program. The down side is it would probably be a pretty risky hire since it would be his first head coaching gig. But then, pretty much any hire you make is going to be a risky hire. He has worked under some very successful head coaches though.

If he continues to show good judgement and as success, I could handle this. I would hope, though, that some new blood could be brought into the program in some way, perhaps with coordinators.

And, I would hope they would at least interview others to see what other talent is available, and not just navel-gaze.

As you said,

He is young.
He is connected to the South.
He has been the main guide through the "what it takes to be an SEC Team" forests.
And as far as I can tell, he is a good recruiter.

Yeah I have no problem with this. If the offense continues to impress under him and he turns out to be a solid recruiter then I am fine with it. Now if the team struggled and the offense was not putting up points then it would be different.

He should be up to interview for it but we still need to look for best available. It sounds like he is networking and doing the right things to position himself well. However if things were to keep heading the direction they are this year, we would be a hot job.

Henson has been at the job only a short while with a senior QB. Let's see how he does developing a QB like Mauk into the starting job before we talk about his ability to be HC.

Let's also see if he can increase recruiting to a higher elevation.

A lot of "if's" but if we continue to improve on the field and in recruiting and if Pinkel sticks around through the end of his contract, I could see Henson maturing into a very viable contender. It will be interesting to see what other kind of names are viable options when the time comes.

All well and good, but we're only six games into the Josh Henson era at Mizzou.

I said this before Henson was hired as the OC.

He's a tremendously rational man. A nice face. A southern accent. A great family man. Just an all around likable guy. And most importantly he's a football man through in through. He speaks the football language as good as anyone. He's young, he's fresh.

If the ride to Pinkels retirement is smooth, Henson will probably take over the program.

Assuming Henson is as good as we think he is going to be, do you think he stays here as OC long enough to take over for Pinkel? I could see him getting a shot at HC somewhere (maybe a smaller school) in the next couple of years. Can Mizzou keep him?

Yes. And here's why.

If he's successful as our OC for 2-4 years he could get a mid level HC job. Hard to see another SEC or major program offering him a HC job after only being an OC for a few years. Because of this success he knows he'll be in a great position to take over Mizzou, an SEC program. Pinkel will have to stay for at least 5-6 more years for us to potentially lose Henson to a HC job.

This of course all hinges on Mizzou being successful.

Cool. Well I hope you're right and we can hang on to him. I was thinking he might get a shot at a smaller school if our offense looks good over then next couple of years.

Unless someone else swoops him up before GP retires.

If he keeps this up, he will be a hot commodity.

Not sure how the carousel will run if Mack Brown saves his arse at Texass.

I just don't see a major program taking a first year OC, or even a 2nd or 3rd year guy if things go well. Only mid major programs would do that, and I don't see Henson leaving for a mid major program when he can wait a little longer and take over at an SEC school, one that he will have his own guys already installed.

Major programs are gonna try to steal a Kirby Smart, or go after a Charlie Strong, James Franklin, or the Boise guy. Not a newb OC, imo.
