Yes, logic (and witnessing similar promotions) would indicate:

Ticket folks, based on history and projection, estimate X-number of tickets will be unsold at kickoff. Barry buys some for, oh, say, a buck each. He buys (for example) 1000 tickets for $1000. He will write a check for the grand and will have a $1000 "donation" for his income tax purposes.

Who came up with the idea doesn't matter. It's great PR, puts butts in the seats, sells some food and drink...and might introduce some folks to the fun of attending.

That's my guess...which is as good as any

Saw tweet from Mater saying 5,000 tickets were reserved. That sounds like a huge success.
