I actually think that Odom's staff will eventually recruit "better" than what we saw with Pinkel.

Consider this, Odom stated his staff had only about 12 days on the road together and only two OV weekends to try and put this class together. Any other time there was a lot of re recruiting of commits that needed to be done. So they simply started out way behind the 8 ball and that's not even taking into account the shite season or the shitshow on campus.

So, I think we'll get a better idea of what this staff can do in the 17 class. Also, like Ove said before, if we can sandwich this class with two quality classes we should be just fine.

Considering the difficulties and the short time the staff had to recruit it is a wonder they did as well as they did. Having said that, next year needs to be better. It's all about filling the needs of your team with talent needed to compete against other teams in the conference. No matter how you slice and dice around that issue, you have to have talented players to compete and hopefully win championships.

The defense got manhandled that whole game.

This!

Offensively we held our own but we got killed at LOS on defense. There were plays Greg Robinson completely man handled our top 2 DL in Ray and Ealy. We lacked athleticism at the 2nd level with Bonner and of course add to that coaching did not help. On paper yes we lost by 17, but for those that blame coaching on our side the same could be said for Auburn. 2 turnovers were caused by missed blocking assignments which led to points for us.

I am tired of seeing good. Good is 10 wins and a third tier New Years bowl. I think like most we and to see great and that requires athletes. So if we want Titles you need top 10 recruiting classes to win championships, that is not opinion that is fact. The only team since 2000 without bringing in top 10 talent and winning a championship is Oklahoma.

If we use our optimistic logic and build on the mizzoumade approach, being ranked between 5-20 is what we need to actually win a championship. And honestly that is where we should be as a program.

Stec got into his head to stunt with the 4 DL and have the LBs 5-7 yards back to recognize and react. The DL ended up stunting out of their gaps and the OL just rode them laterally, leaving Mason his choice of holes to cutback to.

When Stec kept everyone home, and brought the LBs up to fill predetermined gaps, and even added SS support, we did fine. For some reason Stec didn't stay with that.

Fast Forward to 2014, Auburn at K-State. What does the K-State defense do? DL stay home, LB's attack the LOS, SS help on the strongside edge. Result, K-State should have won (kicker sucked).

2013 was not about talent, that loss came from the sideline. Why do certain programs keep winning? They attract the best coaches. The best coaches in big name programs recruit better. But trying to recruit to the top without great coaching is not going to happen. Ask UGA, A&M, LSU (lately), Nebraska, Penn State, Texas, Notre Dame (before Kelly), Miami, Ole Miss, Tenn etc.

The requisites are: You have to have good coaching, schemes that play to the strength of your team and mitigate the strengths of the team you are playing against. Bottom line, you have to have the athletes that can compete against those in your conference. In the SEC (to compete against the upper tier) it means you have to constantly upgrade your team to allow your team to play dominant football.

Wrong...to beat Alabama you need the athletes because Bama is the capstone. The SEC (especially the West) lives off of Bamas coattails. The other teams have been madly inconsistent regardless of recruiting class. Each team gets hyped and then manages to crash.

Mizzou fans need to get off the trip that we tend to always fly on by saying "ALMOST" Even after Pinkel resigned he said that Mizzou needs to get to that next level now. Odom said coming in that he and his staff need to recruit better and more skilled players than under Pinkel. Odom admitted that Pinkel liked recruiting players that weren't being offered by the bluebloods so that they could coach them up. He wants better skilled players so that they can play with and even beat the big boys. Love that if he can do it!

The head coaches at Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Ole Miss. are and were horrible game day and developers of players coaches, but awesome recruiters. They all get the 4-5* players and do nothing with them.

Mizzou won a couple of conference championships, because of a very down East conference and Mizzou had players that fit their scheme.(look at those Butler basketball teams in 2 National Championships a few years back without any highly touted players) We didn't have any 6'5 receivers last year and our offense stunk. When we had tall receivers regardless of youth they made life difficult for the other team's defenses.

There is reason for that. Here's a list of NSD flips.
LINK

If you'll notice most of the flipping is happening in the SEC. You start competing with the bluebloods, this is what you deal with.

Programs like Tenn, Michigan, and Bama are loading up past their limit and dump or push grayshirts on guys committed for months. Why? Because they can.

Don't forget what SEC stands for: Sure Everybody Cheats.
Ole Miss is doing very well......

IMO I think we need to cautiously but firmly move in this direction, but don't forsake what you're good at.
Case in point: 2007 kU

When they won the Orange Bowl, they moved to trying to compete with the bluebloods and it didn't workout so well.

You spend all your time chasing the blueblood recruits....and lose, you miss the guys that you use to get, and find yourself pushed back further in getting talent.
