I don't see how it's that much worse.

I would think wooden bats break a lot more, and teams with more funds could afford to have specially tailored bats, but I guess they could regulate for that.
Teams from smaller schools wouldn't be able to afford all of those bats though.

I played in a wooden bat league. Bats weren't hard to come by. And bat prices would drop some. Just sayin i don't see there being that much of a price difference. Yeah it's more expensive, but i could see them making it happen.

Did you break many? I played a pretty fair amount of semi-pro in my 20's. I broke an average of one bat every year. Of course, this was before the thin handle craze. I remember being way more concerned about the condition of my glove than I was about my bats.

I don't see it being much more expensive, I think most would be surprised at how many bats college teams go through anyway. That aluminum doesn't last forever.
On top of that, I can't see it being that expensive to make wooden bats. You can rip one out on a CNC lathe really fast.

I thought there was much much more put into it than a rip on a lathe.

Yeah but even they show where they have multiple things they do with the bats to make them better after the cut. different finishes, hardening, lacquers, etc. etc.
In other words, it's not cheap. Or maybe they can make a plain NCAA bat that everyone has to use and it's cheaper than a pro bat.

Think wood bats were used up until the 1974 season.

According to the interwebs they are like 55 bucks a bat. That's not bad considering composite bats are hundreds.

Of course they say there is a lot to it. How else could they charge so much. Some call that marketing. The technical term is "bullshite".

$55 is a shitty wood bat. A good wooden bat runs around $130.
I used to coach summer league baseball Team and we played in wooden bats tourneys. We would break about 1 or 2 bats a game. We went through 50 bats one summer.
Obviously, that wouldn't be a big deal for State. Marucci or Louisville Slugger would offer us a sweet contract. It would be harder on your Jackson States and UT Chattanoogas to swing that every year.

This is right. There is a huge variation in the quality of wood bats. The cheap ones are cage bats no one would want to use in the game. They last a long time but with little trampoline effect. The better/more lively the wooden bat -- the easier it is to break. At least that's been my experience. Given the advantage to be had there, they'd have to legislate it into oblivion.

They just mooch tax payer money anyway so no big deal.
But seriously. Let's say they are all good bats and you go through 75 a year, you get them for 100 bucks because you're a university and aren't going to pay full price or taxes. $7,500 a year.
If you use 20 composite bats at $500 each, it's still $2,500 less to go wood.
I realize those prices are ball park, but I just don't see wood being over 5 grand, max, more than what they spend now.

Did any of yall go to your scrimmage today ? My brother (MSU baseball fanatic) is pretty fired up about both Robson and Smith in yall's OF... Said he thinks this will be Cohen's best offensive club during his time in Starkville... And no, he isn't one of the fans that say that every January.
Looking forward to the start of the season... Good luck this year except for April 28th and May 7th, 8th and 9th.

I don't think his brother is too far off. I think we will be solid offensively.
Posted on 1/25/15 at 10:56 am to Donnie Darko Dawg
Yeah I was thinking the same. Certainly don't think we will be worse offensively than this past year.
