If you read the articles, the 52 defense he runs is not a conventional 5-2. It was made specifically for spread offenses.
In his years in college he has had top 25 defenses for all but one year against almost exclusively spread offenses.

My bad didn't read the article. Looks to be a good hire then.
But why would he leave USC to come to State? Especially since he's spent most of his coaching career out west

He is actually not coaching at the moment. He and Coach O are relaxing.

Was a GA at State in '91 under Sherrill, would be a full circle type of deal. Plus coaching in the SEC has to be something that draws the eye for a guy with apparently no aspirations of becoming a HC. We would have to pay him and, as you said, there may be no interest from his end.

.....
He was not retained by USC for 2014 because of the new hire, despite finishing with the best defense in the PAC-12.

Why wouldn't we at least go with 750k+ since that's what Collins would have been raised to this year?

There might not be, but why wouldn't there be at least some interest. I'm sure that he would interview and at least listen. He doesn't want to be sitting at home and said so in the article.

Did not know that USC didn't retain him. Hire the man now.

The best thing about this hire is that they could make it now. I know that theoretically there is no real reason to hire before the bowl game, but damn it sure would be nice to get a guy in place. Jump on this dude and pull the trigger IMO.
ETA: I seriously doubt we see anything done until Mullen's contract is cemented. That will include the budget for assistants so I'm pretty certain no hire will be made before then. Hope I'm wrong though.

Are there any actual rumors going around about someone?

Nah, and I doubt there are. The last few have been out of the blue. This hire is just obscure enough that I would consider it possible.

This would be correct. They're going to have to decide on what the pool will be before offering the job to anyone.
What chaps my arse the most about losing Collins isn't that he's gone. I like all of our defensive assistants and just hope that they get retained. I'm sure Mullen will probably vouch for that.

I think that this guy could be the homerun hire that we all want, yet able to get at a value somewhat.
I haven't seen his name tossed around really anywhere, and he's itching to get back into coaching. He has been stellar at the collegiate level so what's not to like?

There has to be more to it than that. You just don't randomly get fired after having the #1 defense in your conference. I would do some digging if I were Scott and Dan.
ETA: my bad. Didn't know he was let go last year when Sark brought his own guy in. I didn't know he wasn't coaching at all this year.

I'm all in for this guy ATM.

I didn't realize Durkin was at Florida with Mullen and had been with them all the way back to Bowling Green. If someone else doesn't pick him up first, I would think that's our guy.

Hiring Durkin would be like hiring our OC not named Mullen.
Posted on 12/18/14 at 1:22 pm to DynastyDawg
I would not have a problem with Durkin.

Why? I get the argument about Muschamp, or I see the point rather, but Urban certainly wasn't running the defense for him before Champ got there.
