You haven't been watching State football under Dan Mullen if you think that.

I know he likes to redshirt guys...but Brown, Knott and Simmons are playing as true freshman no matter where they sign. Unless either of them sign with Bama.

Roberson is enrolling early at a position with ZERO depth and no players with experience returning

The CBs no matter who they are will play b/c we haven't recruited the numbers necessary to go through a season. We will only have 6 CBs (2 of which have never played a snap) on the entire roster going in to 2016...and half those guys are average (being generous here)

so tell me how those guys don't play?

10 (11 if u count Sandberg) of the 21 have never played a significant snap for MSU. Including Dez Harris mainly due to injury.

I count 7, 8 if Cord is included, which is still a 1/3 of the class.

1 TE (Roberson)

Not most likely

quote:

2 DL (Simmons and possibly Jones)

Jones would most definitely redshirt

quote:

2 DBs (Knott if he signed, +1 LA kid..if no Knott then both LA kids Allen and Morgan Walker)

Neither

If we made a change at OL coach if ONLY due to the list of names...i wouldn't be upset.

Well that's not going to happen.

quote:

2012 3/4

Charles Siddoway
Cole Carter
Dylan Holley

Siddoway started for a year at RT?
Cole Carter is still there
Holley was signed out of JUCO strickly for depth

quote:

2013 2/3

Kent Flowers
Jake Thomas

Both still on path to contribute

quote:

2014 1(+??)/4

Jocquell Johnson

JUCO signed strictly for depth

So I guess my question would be what freshmen outside of elite talent that you can't keep off the field would play heavily?

Also, on the OL, that's why you take 4 or 5 OL most years. You know they're not all going to pan out. It's a numbers game and you never want to be thin. One guy will win a spot and another will be for depth. You just have to take them and develop them. The 2011 class was really the only one that looks bad and when you get a walk on like Beckwith that pans out and the class before produces multiple 3+ year starters that's what happens.

I don't think he's coming to State and likely doesn't play anything more than ST if he does.

Gus Walley and Johnson both return with experience. Roberson will not play significant minutes.

I count 7

Jake Thomas (never played, recently put on medical)
Irvin Sills (no legit snaps, transfer to ND St)
Hammond (injured mostly, transferred)
Christy (injured mostly, transferred)
Wells (never made it to campus if i remember right, or transferred out early)
Chappelle (no legit snaps)
Flowers (transferred out to JUCO this summer)
Simpson (chose baseball as main sport)
Dez Harris (2 ACLs, hasn't really played)
Samuel (late arrival, then quit team)
Sandberg (never arrived)

You may could argue Chappelle "contributed" as a decoy route runner or Dez Harris for S/T plays...but that's a ton of players not produce anything

Who's going to keep Roberson off the two deep?

Farrod Green? Justin Johnson will probably start? Walley can't stay on the field, not his fault but it's the truth. Those are all the TEs 3...i know we are getting Dontae Jones but considering Roberson is an EE and I have no clue when Jones gets here...i said Roberson.

quote:

Jones would most definitely redshirt

you're probably right about that one which is why i said possibly on Kobe

quote:

Neither

agree to disagree here, we just dont have the numbers

quote:

signed out of JUCO strictly for depth

these are misses imo because everyone except Holley was brought in and expected to contribute early, and didn't.

and I realize Hev isn't going anywhere. But a man can dream.

quote:

i listed all the ones i expect to play in 2016...except Jones, he probably does redshirt.

Is Muarice Smitherman going to see action? After the USM game Mullen mentioned that he had looked good in practice and stood a chance at seeing some action at ST.

Actually only gone from State for 1 and 1/2 semesters. Not even a full year. Will be back in December and likely competes for a starting G spot next year.

Samuel (late arrival, then quit team)

He caught a touchdown in the bowl game, but yeah I would count him in your list. I said that it was still a third of a class.

Gus Walley and Justin Johnson. Farrod Green will play before Roberson. You can pretty much bet he will Redshirt. I'm not sure why you think he sees the field at all next year.

quote:

agree to disagree here, we just dont have the numbers

Jiles
Cleveland
Stamps
Smitherman
Rayford
Graham

That's 6 CB's. You're not playing more than that. I'm just not sure what you are looking at.

Who expected them to contribute early? Fans?

So Simmons and AJ Brown? That's the only ones that are going to play next year. Two freshmen =/=

may be the most freshman we have ever had play in Mullen's tenure

yes, but I will admit, deep down part of me is wishing that this 2016 batch is too good to keep off the field, hence making up for all the misses we have had over the last few years...

although I do think the numbers at TE and CB are a bit low. When I say numbers...I don't mean bodies...I mean SEC caliber athletes. Even after a player has "developed" on the sideline for 2 years it doesn't make them SEC caliber

Ask yourself this question...how many of our 2 deep (offense and defense) roster could make another SEC teams 2 deep? (excluding Vandy). 10? 15? Then ask yourself how many of them will be back next year...

I think Justin Johnson should be our every down TE as far as ability goes, but I'm sure he's still learning. I think he and Farrod will easily keep Roberson from ever seeing the field next year, not to mention Walley, who is Dak's roommate and I am the farthest thing from a Walley supporter.

Jiles and Cleveland are going to play. After that I'm not sure who the coaches like the best but I would hope Rayford will be ready after two or three years in the program. I'm just telling you that these new CB's are not going to play. If you think they will you are going to be disappointed. That's just how it works here.

It's not like we are recruiting a bunch of 4 and 5 stars anyway. These guys coming in are not immediate impact players. If they were I would agree with you but the reality is they just aren't. We recruit and develop. That's what the program is built upon. Take issue with that if you want but these freshmen aren't going to play.

you make valid points...and i hope to be proven wrong the rest of the season by those two position groups.

quote:

These guys coming in are not immediate impact players

This is where we differ. Because Justin Johnson was not thought to be an immediate impact player either...but he is, and part of the reason Christy transferred out and Hammond left the team.

I agree we are a developmental program, and don't have any issues with it honestly. I do however believe we are getting to the point where we are recruiting over our "developed" players.

ETA: Which is a good thing. It's what every other SEC team is trying to do. It creates real depth and more competition

I am feeling at 2014 start of the season kind of run coming on. I guess it is bc Dak looked like that guy again (the best player in the country). But I feel like he's going to give everything he has, we will win 3 of the last 4 and he gets a seat in NYC. I know it was Kentucky, but it looked so much like that three game stretch from last season.

That said, I know they are trash, but Mizzou worries me ha.

I'm trying to go to the Missouri game next week.

Very winnable game, and we don't play there for another 12 years? or something like that. Need to check Columbia off the list.

Anyone else going to try and make the trip?

Yeah I hate how their is such little variety in scheduling when it comes to SEC scheduling. Pretty stale.
