That makes me sad. If he did it, he should go to jail along with the admins who tried to cover it up. If he is innocent and she is lying she should go to jail and be liable for a defamation suit.

Wow ... just wow.

My oldest daughter graduated from UNC's J-school. There were rumors, even back then over ten years ago about things like this happening. They've got a major problem there and if that had been my daughter ... well, it would be bad for the rapist.

That young lady came across as completely and totally credible.

If anything I see this as good news for UNC because it gets the basketball team out of the limelight.

UNC football about to get hammered and no one will give a shite

QFT

College football and basketball are running campuses.

It's like when they kept using the term "culture problem" when the Penn State story came out.

I hate to seem negative but that type of "culture" is everywhere. Probably not to the degree of Penn State but at all these major P5 schools, the most powerful men on campus are their football or basketball coach.

We've known this for decades .... but UNC seems to be particularly corrupt.

Ohhhh but the stories from the 60s and 70s of some of their antics. I hope it all catches up with them soon.

Latest on UNCheats out today Going on 7 years now

quote:

The school's procedural arguments cited an expired four-year statute of limitations. It stated a March 2012 ruling that included sanctions against the football program should have precluded later charges, because some of the academic issues were examined during that first probe starting in fall 2011.

Looks like the UCLA / Wooden defense is in play

quote:

None of the NCAA charges is tied solely to the existence of the problem AFAM courses. Rather, they are focused on failures in oversight. The NCAA charged Nyang'oro and Crowder with failing to cooperate with its investigation in 2014 and 2015. It also charged a former faculty member and women's basketball academic counselor with providing improper help on research papers and assignments.

UNC has used the Jedi mind trick on the NCAA it appears

At least they're making it entertaining. The NCAA messed up HUGE when they reworded some of the allegations to not stress football and basketball.

https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/unc/article110315307.html

quote:

That cooperative spirit wasn’t in evidence Tuesday, when newly released correspondence showed the NCAA no longer views the university as a partner in the investigation. It instead cited the university’s “willful violations” and “blatant disregard” for NCAA regulations. On Friday, both sides are expected to be battling again before the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions in an unusual preliminary hearing.

UNC is seeking to have a major infractions case thrown out through due-process issues. One of its arguments: The NCAA knew about the fake classes in mid-2011 while investigating other misconduct involving the football team but did not take action.

The NCAA rejected all of UNC’s arguments – and asserted that the university didn’t tell the NCAA everything it should have about the classes in 2011. The commission that accredits UNC made a similar charge in putting UNC on probation for a year in 2015.

quote:

“It is now clear that the institution did not provide the (NCAA) enforcement staff with the entire body of pertinent information at that time, and the NCAA relied to its detriment on the thoroughness of the institution’s production,” the NCAA’s enforcement staff wrote. A recent News & Observer series, “Carolina’s Blind Side,” showed how UNC officials either downplayed the classes’ link to athletics or refused to believe something like that could happen in Chapel Hill.

quote:

That report found 18 years of fake classes – most of them created by Deborah Crowder, a longtime office manager in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies. More than 3,100 students took at least one of the classes, with athletes making up roughly half of that group despite representing less than 4 percent of the student body. Football and men’s basketball players were the two top beneficiaries of the classes by sport. The classes had no instruction and only required a paper to be submitted to obtain a high grade. They began as independent studies, but Crowder in 1999 began disguising them as lecture classes to get around a limit on how many independent studies a student could take.

Greg Sankey is the Chief Hearing Officer on the Committee on Infractions. found this from Oct 17. somehow, NoCar was afforded a very unusual pre-hearing meeting on Friday, Oct 21.

- Over the weekend, the chief hearing officer reviewed the request
and the attached documents as a prehearing procedural issue under NCAA Bylaw 19.7.6
and COI IOP 2-6-3. The chief officer concludes that the institution has not met the good
cause standard, and he will not add the October 14, 2016, material to the record.
However,
he approves the institution submitting up to a 10-page targeted and synthesized submission
by close of business on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. If the institution chooses to provide
the submission, it must be provided to all parties. All parties shall have until Friday,
October 21, 2016, to submit any response in a similar format and provide it to all parties.

I think it's amazing to see how many other cases the NCAA has opened and closed since opening the unc investigation years ago. This is really dragging on for a long time.

How UNC basketball’s academic aide may be connected to bogus classes

quote:

In 2007, when Eric Hoots was a video coordinator for UNC-Chapel Hill’s men’s basketball team, he sent an email to Deborah Crowder, the architect of the bogus “paper” classes that existed for nearly two decades.

In that message, he forwarded “AFAM Papers” to Crowder, who was the office manager for the African and Afro-American Studies department. “Thanks for the help,” he wrote. “I will see you soon...” Eric Hoots, UNC assistant to the athletic director & director of player development. Eric Hoots, UNC assistant to the athletic director & director of player development. UNC

Today, Hoots tracks players’ academic progress as the assistant to the athletic director and director of player development for coach Roy Williams; his duties include serving as the program’s in-office academic coordinator. It’s unclear if he knew what Crowder was up to back then. He and UNC officials have declined to say whether the papers he forwarded to Crowder were for classes later found to be bogus.

quote:

“It looks bad, and if people see it, given (UNC’s) track record, they are going to assume it’s bad,” said Burley Mitchell, a former state Supreme Court chief justice who served as a member of the UNC system Board of Governors.

quote:

A second email involving Hoots has the same subject. It lists two attachments, described as “summerpaper1.doc; summerpaper2.doc.” UNC redacted the sender’s name and the date of the email, which suggests the sender is a student.

From the email originated by the basketball player to Eric Hoots, and then forwarded to Crowder.
quote:

“Hey Eric,” the sender wrote. “You dont (sic) realize how much I owe you for this. I’m gonna be the one that pays for lunch from here on out or something. And I just put those papers as an attachment.”

quote:

“It would obviously be a problem if the UNC basketball program's academic coordinator was involved in the paper classes scheme,” said John Shelton Reed, a retired sociology professor at UNC best known for his research into Southern culture. “I'm surprised that the athletic department isn't downright eager to answer questions and clear things up."

Using the UCLA / Wooden method. If it drags on long enough Dean Smith will be allowed to ride off into the sunset just like Wooden.

NCAA ISSUES 3rd NOA to UNC (revised from 2nd NOA in April.)

Take a look at what UNC 247 is reporting.
https://northcarolina.247sports.com/Bolt/NCAA-issues-UNC-new-amended-NOA-49951982

quote:

The new NOA, which will be the third notice for this case, will include and reinstate aspects from the original NOA. The amended NOA which was released on April 25 and had removed all references to the men’s basketball and football programs.

"include and reinstate aspects from the original NOA."

Basically this is how it went down:
- UNC committed decades of academic fraud.
- UNC got caught.
- UNC "partnered" with the NCAA to investigate.
- UNC discovered a more widespread system of fraud during the investigation.
- The NCAA send the original NOA and IT DID name Men's BBall and Football as beneficiaries of the fraudulent classes.
- UNC issues response.
- NCAA sends Amended NOA (2nd NOA) removes Men's BBall and Football from the ledger.
- UNC sends response that states they DO NOT recognize the NCAA's authority to deal with academic issues.
- NCAA finally gets mad.
- NCAA issues Amended NOA (3rd NOA) and now 247 is reporting that the New NOA will reinstate allegations from the original NOA. (I bet they'll bring Men's BBall and Football back into frame.)

ANOTHER ARTICLE
https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/unc/article122190244.html

quote:

UNC-Chapel Hill has received a third notice of allegations from the NCAA in the academic fraud case, several weeks after appearing before the association’s Committee on Infractions in a rare procedural hearing. Rick White, a UNC spokesman, confirmed in a short email that the third notice had been delivered. He did not offer details, but said the new notice would be posted on UNC’s website. The case involves 18 years of bogus classes offered by a former manager of the African and Afro-American Studies department and the department chairman. Half of the roughly 3,100 students who took the classes were athletes, with football and men’s basketball having the highest enrollments.
