Well frick you then. Stopped reading.

On a serious note, a lot of kids shoot their first deer that is "antlerless". Thats generally a big memory in many peoples lives. Both parents and little hunters.

I moved to SC about 6 years ago and have yet to hunt this state. It's just more cost effective for me to hunt the land I had access to in NC than it is here. Quite honestly, the hunting is a bit better too due to the game laws.

With that out of the way, it is a step in the right direction that will improve the overall deer herd in SC. You control the population by managing does. You control the quality of your bucks by putting antler restrictions and/or limiting how many you can take in a given season.

Those of you who claim not to be trophy hunters have never chased a big buck. Probably haven't even had the opportunity due to the "if it's brown it's down" mentality in this state.

That's total bullshite. That's not the mentality in this state anymore than it is anywhere. I've hunted damn near every latitude in NC from Mecklenburg County all the way East to Gates County and everywhere in-between - and plenty of anterless deer get put-down for meat all across that state.

I like you staying up there to hunt though ... please continue that practice.

And everyone is a trophy hunter ... you and that other guy both put words in peoples' mouths like a woman will do. No one here said anything about "not being a trophy hunter." I can absolutely positively tell you that I have more trophy racks, true 150+ trophy racks, than both of you combined ... deer taken from SC, GA, NC, AL, Michigan, Maryland, Tennessee and Wisconsin. We all take trophy bucks when the opportunity presents itself and just last year I must have let a half dozen small bucks and several does walk right past me .... but I will take a young two year old or so buck and/or doe for meat if it's late in the season.

The problem we do have, and the reason I do support minimum restrictions, is kids just getting into hunting are chomping at the bit to get their cheeks bloodied and a lot of time overzealous Dads are right there encouraging that first kill, anterless or not.

It didn't used to be that way unless you were a poor family that needed the meat back in the day.

I honestly can't think of an individual or group who rent property or that are apart of a hunting club that don't have restrictions of their own. I believe if you want to increase the population of trophies then the season must be shortened. August 15 - January 1 is a long time, especially for a rifle season.

Again, I could care less about trophies. I'm not saying I don't hope to kill one each season, but it's not my purpose for hunting. If I want a trophy bad enough then I'd go to some ranch in Texas or elsewhere where they hand feed the frickers and you can whistle them to your stand.

^^absolutely true.

I know its hard for some people to gather, but i was raised to eat what you kill by my grandfather.
If I wanted some big wall mount, then I would just take a hunting trip out to the midwest or montana or something. I would rather take the clean meat and feed my family with it, than waste my season waiting on the big lottery pick to come into the clear.

Don't worry big buck hunters, I will do my part by taking the big does and "nannie" does out of the way so that y'all can continue to waste your season looking for that big kill.

I'm on your side Tipton ... I do believe you should be able to take deer for meat. I do believe the season is too long. I do believe every club of which I am a member has minimum restrictions. I do believe there should be restrictions in SC overall, I just believe they should not be too constrictive, should include at least one anterless buck and more does, and I do not believe people should be charged for tags. It should be handled like turkey tags are handled.

Rooster I think you misconstrued my point. I don't believe SC will ever be a true "trophy" state. You have to define trophy. I never came on here bragging about killing 150" horned deer all over the country. A trophy by my standards is a mature deer (4.5+), not the 1.5 year old spikes and fork horned deer that you see at so many processors. I'll take does over young bucks any day. Point is, you work with what you have. If you have 150"+, great. If a 100" 4.5 year old is all you have, great. I'm just saying practice QDMA and get neighbors to do the same. BUT, with kids, let them take their first deer as whatever, I'm fine with that. However after #1 is out of the way, they need to be taught proper management I believe. Hunting is not just about the kill as much as it's about the entire conservation effort.

You are correct in that the brown it's down mentality is rampant in NC as well. It is in most states where there aren't tighter quotas.

There is one thing we can agree on though, rifle season is way too long here. That is another reason why I have continued hunting NC. We have now only, except for two weeks of black powder, from early September through Thanksgiving week. That, to me, is the best time to be in the woods.

Then we are in total agreement. Total 100% agreement.

I'm getting my son to upload pics of some of the recent bucks I've taken. I hope he'll have them done for me tomorrow some time.
