I'll miss him for the character he was and what he brought to the program.

He's become a member of the Gamecock family IMHO - donated a lot of time and money to things other than football over the years.

But it was time. It really was. He did the right thing and put us in a good position to get ahead of the circus that will be filling the job.

Now, the real question is what will it take for Elliot to get the job? Four wins and a bowl win? Five wins and a bowl win? I dunno.

If he beats Vandy, The Citadel, Tennessee and Clemson who knows.

But last night and today has been bittersweet for me. I got to know Coach a little over the years, was there sitting right in front of him with Ainsley Earhardt when he gave his speech In The Zone and spent some time with him that afternoon before he took off for St Augustine. Partied with him at a friend's birthday late one night and had a blast. He is a good guy - a rare individual - one of a kind really. I think we'll all miss his antics to some degree but it is time to move on.

This next hire is gonna be a big one. Let's hope Tanner can handle the responsibility.

Agree completely. Sad. Felt like a punch in the gut yesterday but after thinking about it, it was the right move for all involved

Spurrier did us a big favor this week. He could have made it through the year. It wouldn't have changed his legacy, and he knew if he up and quit now he would open himself up to a lot of critics to take shots at him. However, he understood how much better it would be for the program if he would go ahead and leave now so that the process of replacing him could start, and it would give us the best chance to identify our top targets and stabilize our recruiting. Had he waited until December, there would be many more openings, early entry recruits would get second thoughts without time to soothe things over, and the program would look bad as if we forced him out. This really was the best possible outcome given the circumstances, and coach deserves credit for that.

I wasn't surprised he was announcing his retirement but the effective immediately part threw me for a loop at first.

But after some thinking it made sense. Spurrier hates losing and with so much of the fanbase saying he should not be back next season he went ahead and removed himself and is letting his assistants he cares about try and turn this around.

Honestly I don't think it has really hit me yet that the Spurrier era is over yet with the press conferences today and all the talk about him and his legacy at USC. I've been telling myself the last game I saw him coach in person was the UK game but I don't think that will hit me until I'm sitting in Williams-Brice Saturday

This scares me to death. Not feeling any confidence in tanner. Holbrook seems to be the type of hire that would bury our football team for 20 years.

I cant name one thing Tanner has done as AD that has inspired any confidence to me.

And CG, there is no crying in football.
Actually years ago i left that dreadful Auburn homegame where garcia just shite all over the bed and we lost to them at home. Probably the most painful loss in my history of fandom. Got back to my tailgate spot and found my 25 yr old baby sister crying her eyes out. I yelled at her for a while for crying and then thought about what had transpired and almost felt bad for getting angry at her.

I doubt Garcia legitimately remembers one single moment of that entire game.

I wish i didnt.

I saw us lose to the citadel in person and i swear that is probably the 4th most painful loss in my history of rooting for the cocks. That auburn game is easily #1.

The Auburn game was pretty embarrassing...well..it was EXTREMELY embarrassing. Did you read the write up Garcia did for SDS about "finally pleasing Spurrier"? Pretty interesting.

I think HBC has set you guys up for the future. You just have to find that next good coach which I know is easier said than done.

I'll be rooting for you guys.

It's not that long of an article...it was actually written by Garcia himself. Here's the link to the article:

The day I finally pleased Coach Spurrier - Stephen Garcia

We've had some pretty bad losses during our golden era but that was one of the worst losses.. probably my vote for the worst. I was a student in the student section that night and I think that's where the tradition (I'll admit, a rather tacky one) of throwing your towels on the field in disgust started.. I'd never seen the student section so angry in my life. It was violent. The police had to escort the Auburn players past the student section. Students were throwing things at them.
