I just looked at some of the 2017 recruits the coaching staff is now engaging with and there is some elite talent there.
Like who? Can we get a preview of what to expect next offseason?

'17 as some better in-state prospects, like Shi Smith, OrTre Smith, Robinson, Rudolph, Register, Cann and Bentley. I like our shot with all those guys. If Bentley doesn't get into Stanford, we will probably get the #4 Pro Style QB in the nation.
Borderline 5* DB Stanford Samuels has us in his Top4 right now.
5* DB Deangelo Gibbs liked uga, and McClendon was his recruiter, but now TRob and McClendon will recruit him for SC.
4* OLB from Shelby, NC, Justin Foster, is a utk lean right now, but we'll have help in the area to get him to come visit some and consider us.
N/R DT Emmanuel McNeil isn't rated yet, but he's going to be a big time player, we have Lance and Hutzler working with him for us. '
4* OLB from AL, Markail Benton, will be hard to pull from the state of AL, but Muschamp was one of his favorite recruiters while he was at auburn, so we'll have a shot here.
3* OL Douglas and Moore from Mallard Creek almost already committed to SC, and Elliott just has to keep the relationship going.
4* WR Trey Blount really likes SC, but Bubba and GA were big factors in that.
4* CB Marco WIlson from FL has SC out front right now.

Thanks. Upvoted.
If we can get back to winning ways, I think we'll be seeing some seriously high rankings come our way in the next few years.

Just offered 2017 DB Deon Jones. Top 100 player for his class.
Also, saw that CWM was at Northwester HS this morning to talk to DE/TE Logan Rudolph.

4* QB Jake Bentley picked up another Crystal Ball projection for SC today.

Surprise, surprise. I think he just enrolled at Dutch Fork and will play for them next year.

Tucker is a 6-foot-6, 325-pounder and to me, his film is very good

2017 JUCO OT we placed at GMS, Dennis Daley, said he's still committed to SC. Elliott gave him the offer 2 years ago and helped with the placement, but I don't know if he's still "offered" by the new staff. We'll find out soon enough if we bring him in for visits.

Shi Smith from Union just got an offer from Alabama today. Kid is slick with the ball in his hands.

I play golf with one of his coaches I'll see if I can find anything
Posted on 2/1/16 at 8:50 pm to mikeboss550
I think it's a Carolina/Clemson battle for him. I have a friend who teaches at Union, and he is a baller, just has a tendency to get in trouble from time to time.
Posted on 2/1/16 at 9:00 pm to UpstateCock2007
I've heard the same. Slight lean to Clemson due to the offense and don't be surprised to see UT in the mix as well.
Posted on 2/1/16 at 9:10 pm to mikeboss550
I would hate to see him go to UT, but would hate to see Clemson worse. Hopefully Bentley can start helping us snag guys from the Upstate.

Hopefully Bobby can repair some of his old, hard feelings, relationships in the upstate. He is not exactly revered up there ... but it's all repairable.
He was known to poach players and occasionally run up the score against some of the coaches he now needs to send players our way.

I know I hate him for running it up against me at state in '05
Posted on 2/2/16 at 6:16 am to scrooster
He has a lot of guys from his coaching tree at big talent-producing schools, right? I remember Byrnes from their hay day, but didn't know he was disliked that much.
Posted on 2/2/16 at 8:22 am to UpstateCock2007
He must be like the Florida-esque Spurrier of SC high school ball with running the score up.
Posted on 2/3/16 at 11:17 am to Carolina_Girl
I don't know that I'd call it running up the score as much as I would teams couldn't stop the two and threes. I may be mistaken but that is what I saw a few times...

Looking over the current Scholarship Chart, there are some glaring needs for the '17 class. We're graduating a lot of likely starters this year, after the '16 season, on offense and defense, and there are some gaps in age for potential '17 replacements.
https://gc.gamecockcentral.com/static-pages/south-carolina-gamecocks-football-scholarship-breakdown
QB - We're good, McIlwain is the Future. If not this year, Mich or Nunez will get their shot. However, picking up another Elite QB like Bentley could be huge for depth.
RB - We've needed to sign a stud RB for the past 3 years. The closest we've gotten is Dowdle, who will be really good. However, we need a true 5*/high 4* stud RB. Dowdle played most of HS at QB or WR. It's not make or break in '17, but it would be good to get one.
FB - Crosby still has 3 seasons, we're ok here, but we'll need one in '18 for sure.
WR - We have 12 scholly WR's, all of them are Soph's or younger. If we don't have 5-6 guys that step up this year, we'll need 2 stud WR's this class and it will be paramount.
TE - I think Hinson is going to be a good TE, and we have Markway who's better than I expected. Not the hugest priority, but if an elite TE is available that would be good.
OL - We only have 14 OL, that's low, IMO. It takes about 2 years to develop a SEC OL'man. We got 6 last year, but I don't think we recruited well at OL this year. Next year Elliott needs to bring in 2-3 stud OL (not 5*'s but at least mid 4*'s.) He should sign about 5 OL though total. This is one of the biggest positions of need IMO for the '17 class.
DT - Will not be a huge priority for '17, unless we take 1 or 2 'can't pass on' studs. We have good depth here.
DE - Even more concerned about this than OL. We don't have good depth. Blackshear is not a lock to contribute 4 more years. English and Lewis graduate this year. This is the single biggest need for the '17 class, IMO. We need 3-4 DE's this class, and 2 of them need to at least high 4*'s if we're going to not get hit with lack of talent in '17's DL.
Otherwise, we'll run a lot of 3-4 schemes, b/c we lack quality pass rushers. I like the DE Keir Thomas we brought in this year though, he's going to be great. Probably will need JUCO help.
LB - We graduate 4 LB's after '16's season. Half of the 2 Deep. This is the 3rd position I'm most concerned about for '17's class. We'll need about 4 LB's this class, and 2 better be able to step up into the 2 Deep. Probably will need JUCO help.
S - We didn't take a true S this year, so we'll need 2 next year. We have 3 of 4 on this year's 2 Deep who are Jr's or Sr's.
CB - King and Lammons will be Jr's next year and the most likely starters. So getting 2-3 of the CB's this cycle, who can develop into All SEC level in 18 months will be really important. Probably don't need JUCO help here, but we need TRob to bring a few high ranked studs.
K - We're good here, Charlton is going to be a beast. Although with 3 scholarship K's graduating, I wouldn't be surprised if we use at least 1 scholly in '17 on a K. In case something crazy happens to Charlton.
Summary (needs the most help to be addressed in '17:)
1. DE
2. OL
3. LB
4. CB
