I haven't seen much from Saturday's scrimmage. I did hear that David Williams performed better than in the past, and also that McIlwain was the only QB who didn't throw a pick.

Anyone else got any info?

Not really much to go off of since media/public weren't allowed in. Just a few things I read elsewhere:

- Chavis Dawkins looked good
- TySon Williams is the real deal
- Observer feels like Orth will take the first snap
- Only INT was made by Elder (no info on who threw it)
- Defense was flying around

Muschamps thinks the DL is coming along great, he's happy with the effort from the young DL.

Coaches feel like they have a high "hit" rate on the WR's they recruited. Lots of effort, guys getting open in practice, etc....

No QB separated himself at the scrimmage. Orth and McIlwain neck and neck.

D Whitfield moved from DL to interior OL. Charleson moved from WR to DB.

DB Montac (late scholly addition from JUCO) got his bell wrong at the scrimmage. No word yet on if or how long he'll be out, but I imagine he's under concussion protocols.

Crosby is back starting yesterday. Hurst has been lighting it up though in his absence. Hurst is supposedly faster than last year, and already has the frame of a SEC TE.

Jamari Smith is getting open a lot, he's going to be big for us in the slot this year.

They weren't allowed to run inside/b/w the tackles, and RB's had to bounce outside. That serves Turner's game well, but D Williams also looked really good with that too.

Nice, just what I was looking for. The only thing really concerning me is that someone thinks Orth will start vs. Vandy. I mean, simply from a probability standpoint, I think the team would do better with McIlwain as a running threat. If Orth and McIlwain are no different in passing, but you get the added mobility of McIlwain, I would think it's a no brainer to play him. He is young yes, but clearly has the attitude of a competitor. I am not an SEC coach though so, whatever ha.

In addition, I like that we ran outside more. That forces the secondary to get off blocks and make tackles, something we were woeful at last year. More reps doing that will help come game time when we are facing off against players like Chubb etc.

I don't really get caught up in recruiting but I remember keeping up with this kid and hoping he'd pick us.

Although with the prohibition on running in between the tackles I take it with a grain of salt

I thought he couldn't play this season anyway.

Here's the link to Spurticus's Practice Report over on CT.

https://cockytalk.com/showthread.php?t=226034

It echoes what I've read elsewhere too. It's an exciting read.

What I read elsewhere:
QB's are still battling for position. Bentley might be the most talented QB, but he doesn't have as much time with the playbook. Turner is #1 RB. D WIlliams had a good practice/scrimmage. B Edwards was making insane 1 handed catches, redzone threat, scoring points. Deebo and Banks are really fast. Hurst is in for a Breakout Season, he can catch, run and run block. Defense was getting pressure, King made a diving INT. McIlwain is elusive and so is Turner. Starting OL should be really solid. Sawyer moved to DE and Lewis inside on passing downs. The tempo of the practice was unlike anything we've done in 30 year fans' memories.

Yeah it's a wall of text for sure.

TL;DR - It's good info, but it's a slog to get through.

I'll be attending the scrimmage tomorrow (Saturday the 19th) night so I should be able to glean some pertinent observations while there. We're having dinner first with some of the coaches - and I'm pretty sure we're going to get to stay and watch the entire scrimmage if we want.

I probably will not be allowed to share any secret stuff I would imagine - but at least I'll be able to get a feel for things and can share the stuff not considered top secret in terms of plays or whatever. OpSec will be important this year.

I cannot wait for that first game ... perhaps the most important season opener in recent history for our program.

Understatement. It really feels like football season now that you're on the board again.

Call it sappy or whatever, it feels real haha.

It's good to be back. I missed y'all.

Literally just got off the plane a couple of hours ago and I told my wife first thing I was gonna do was activate my new phone that I knew was waiting on me (I got one of these Moto Z Force things) and get my new tablet set-up (I got another iPad mini but newer and with more memory) and then I was going to catch-up with my piasanos on the SECr and find out what's been going-on.

We actually were not supposed to come back until the 23rd but when I got the invite to attend the dinner and scrimmage this Saturday we decided it was time to come home.

I totally avoided the election news and sports news all summer so I've got a lot of catching up to do. Reading the recruiting thread it looks like our coaches have been busy. I did hear this morning, talking to a friend, who has attended all three open practices, that we're going to be better than predicted by everyone in his opinion but he's still worried about RB. He usually knows his stuff so I trust his observations.

I've got a lot of catching-up to do though - going to make a lot of calls today and find out how things are going.

No, I know what you mean. I missed y'all ... but I cannot imagine all the trolling y'all had to endure this off-season. I'd bet it was brutal.

I gave my youngest daughter my tablet before we left - and my old droid, which I had had for almost four years ... a Razr, was only good for calling and simple things anymore. But the problem was that Verizon has some sort of different chip sets they use in their phones and tablets that work in different parts of the country and the world. I always have the International chip sets installed in my phones but if I had ordered the phone while in Honolulu it would have come with one made for that time region and it would have given me problems (or so they say) activating it while out there. So I had to wait until I got home ... plus the Moto Z Force did not come out until a couple of weeks ago so I just figured I'd wait until I got home.

It's a neat phone ... got these mods with it like a spare battery pack and JBL speakers and a projector - haven't tried them out yet but I'm about to go give them a try. This projector attachment is supposed to project HD video onto a wall or screen 70" diagonal. So, wherever I am I'll be able to watch large screen ESPN or HBO or whatever using my phone.

Anyways, I'm kinda excited about this thing. It's slick.

Best thing though, so far, is getting to catch up with y'all and talk some Gamecock football. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we're going to show some big effort and improvement this year over last. If we do, we'll not be as bad as everyone seems to be predicting.

Thanks 1801

We'll .... I just left the scrimmage, we're on the way home. I stayed for the whole thing. We're not supposed to talk about or post about what we saw too much and I am going to honor that ... but they didn't say we couldn't answer a few questions. We just are not supposed to talk about specific plays and formations and we're not supposed to have taken or post any pictures of formations or anything like that but ...

I'll start it out with these observations.

We seem to start slow and cold and then we warm up as we go.

I'm very concerned about our running game. Have never been a big fan of Elliott's OLines ... I'm still not. I really hope he proves me wrong once the games begin to matter.

AJ Turner is a good talent but he is not featured-back material.

AJ could be a great scat back just don't think he's thick enough to pound the ball inside 15-20 times. Could prove me wrong, we'll see. Hoping DWill finally comes around and shows why he was so highly recruited. I know you prop can't say to much but what were your thoughts on the QB play?

Bentley is going to be really good in a couple of years.

Orth is going to start imho.

McIlwain is the most mobile of course ... but he makes freshman mistakes. We're just going to have to suffer through that this year.

There were some dropped passes that should have been caught early ... there were some really nice catches late.

Deebo and Edwards both have big time potential.

Hurst is a weapon and made one or two really nice catches. The way they are going to use him, if the QB can hit him on these particular difficult to cover routes ... Hurst could be a weapon.

There was this kid wearing #22 tonight, Feaster was his name if I remember correctly. He looked pretty good.

We are.seriously three deep at punter.

Frye was nailing 40+ yard FGs like butter.

ETA: AJ runs hard ... but our inside running game is horrible. He's a change of pace back.

I thought Rod Tally looked the best tonight.

Paulk ran hard.

Didn't see David Williams until late in the scrimmage but he trucked someone. He's got all the ability in the world .... running outside the tackles. You just can't ask, or expect, him to do squat inside the tackles.

I dunno why the OLine is getting so much praise. I didn't see it in the running game (who knows, perhaps our DLine is going to be that good) although they did okay pass blocking.

About our defense ...

Ok, so on defense there is an interesting dynamic happening.

First from a pure observational perspective in terms of where the coaches were working.

I think, I'm not sure but I think, Roper was on the sideline calling in plays the entire scrimmage and talking to the guys in the box upstairs.

Muschamp, on the other hand, was on the field ten or fifteen yards behind the QBs watching plays develop.

Very rarely did any defensive coach take to the field or come off the sidelines. Now, I think Muschamp was where he was more to watch plays develop than to have any input on the offense ... had he been behind the defense he would have been in the way. I didn't see him interjecting himself into any thing the offense did - he was just watching.

I saw all the D coaches working their guys hard when they came off the field - and a lot of shuffling was going-on with the defense.

That brings up a good point I should touch-on.

The scrimmage was run as two, one hour each, halves. They started promptly at 8:00, scrimmaged hard until 9:00, took a 15 minute break then went hard at it again until 10:15 and then we were done.

It was fast and furious and physical. All the assistants and sideline crew and support people and refs and umps were very involved from start to finish.

So with that picture painted ...

We're going to be better on defense than the pundits are suggesting imho. Good gosh ... I hate to admit this, but if Muschamp would have come here instead of Auburn last year .... there are so many different scenarios that could have played-out instead of what happened.

Anyways - we're lacking depth in the secondary but the guys are playing hard and fearless and smart. Completely different body language than last year already - they appear to really want to not be the weak link.

DLine ... they're gonna be fine. Some of the things they are doing with the DLine are brilliant. They reminded us not to talk about formations and stuff after someone said something outloud about the DLine and then whipped out his phone to take a picture (which he got called on) ... but Lance Romance and Boom have drawn it up to get the most out of the strengths of their personnel. They are doing things in such a way ... it's clear their mindset is to keep everything contained inside the tackles (as in corral) and put a ton of pressure on the QB. Could cost us if someone gets draws and dives going but I think there is a plan for that too.

To be continued ....

So, Rooster..we had the annual prediction thread on tRant for the fans of each team to predict the regular season record for their team.

I believe most everybody here went with 6-6 with the exception of Tip and I, who went with 7-5. I know the final average of all of our predictions combined ended up being 6-6.

What say you on the matter?
