Great game last night, I watched the replay when I got it. Webb was elite again. 8 IP, 11 K's, 2 H's, 3 BB's and 0 ERA. That mound they have out there is weird, he fell on his butt early in the game, b/c he couldn't keep his footing on that turf.

Overall, we played solid ball, but still had too many LOB. Destion's catch going into the wall reminded me of the plays we would make a few years ago, where guys would lay it on the line any and all games to get things done. I think this team was much more focused and ready to play last night then Thursday night. We let Vandy get up early Thursday and then tried to catch up. We came out much better last night.

Got over the series loss to vandy, team bounced back to beat a really solid Coastal Carolina team tonight, 4-2.

Good win. Have an extremely winnable series this weekend. Even taking 2/3 out me us at 27-6 (9-3). Really good start to the year, especially with a tough draw for those first 3 series.

I agree. I thought it was a good start for Widener too - his best effort on the season thus far. It would only help the pitching staff to have another solid starter develop throughout the season.

It's still early in the conference schedule, but USC's next 3 weekends will be against Tennessee (17-11, 3-6), UGA (17-13, 4-5), and Missouri (17-13, 2-7). The UT and Mizzou series are at home.

If the Gamecocks can go 7-2 against Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt with 2 of those series on the road, at the WORST I certainly expect them to go 7-2 against these next 3 SEC opponents. That would leave the team at 14-4 in SEC play on the season: I'm looking at the team going 20-10 in SEC play this season - if they can get to that point, then they will host the Regional and stand a strong chance of hosting the Supers too. Heck, teams have won the SEC regular season title before with 20-10 records.

By going 14-4, USC would only need to go 6-6 the rest of the way to get to that point. As I said, going 7-2 over the next 3 weekends is the worst I feel the team should do, as the competition over that stretch won't come close to what we've already faced. So the chance to even improve on those numbers is definitely there...

I say "expect", but of course I know "it's baseball" and nothing is etched in stone. For me it's more of a hopeful expectation: the potential is definitely there, so I'm hoping the team steps up and capitalizes on that potential.

I'm also hoping for that kind of capitalization, because as tough the first 3 weeks in SEC play was, after these next 3 series, we go from the frying pan into the fire, with consecutive series against Florida, Kentucky, Texas A&M, and lastly Alabama. We luck out on missing Miss State this season, which looks to be the top team in the West this year.

But after Vanderbilt who we've already played, the next 5 toughest SEC teams is Miss State (who we won't play), and then the final 4 opponents on our schedule.

So in other words, we need to strike while the iron is hot, and win as many of the next 9 SEC games as possible. Going 9-0 would certainly be helpful. Take it one game at a time....

Always glad to get the W but how is UT's hitting this season? We've given up a few more runs than I would've expected.

Tennessee came into the series 4th in the SEC in BA at .310 - we've dropped to a tie of 5th with LSU and UF at .301 after our series with Vanderbilt.

UT was also 2nd in the SEC I believe in runs scored per game after Vanderbilt, with 222 runs scored in 29 gms, or 7.7 rpg. USC averaged 6.9 rpg coming into this weekend, and now have scored 7 runs in each of the first 2 gms of the series.

Where UT is struggling is with their pitching and defense. But in any case, I think it's a combination of our own pitching not necessarily having their A-Games, with UT's own hitting. It's not just that the Vols have hit and scored on us, it's how we've come at them: Clarke fell behind in pitch counts a lot in the Friday game, and was barely able to get to 6 innings with around 115 total pitches, when he usually is a complete-game candidate with his control.

Even so, it wasn't his pitching in Gm #1 that was the issue as much as it was Brandon Murray's, who turned an easy win for us into a nail-biter without retiring a single Volunteer batter. Schmidt gave up a ton of hits, but he was managing them with little damage...but the game blew apart once he had to leave the game.

Today I felt Webb struggled early, especially in the 2nd inning, but even the 1st inning he was off with a HBP. The 2nd inning however it took a great infield effort to turn a double-play to stop Brandon getting lit up by the Vol hitters. After that he settled down and pitched strongly after that, allowing only 1 run and 4 hits after the 2nd inning.

But we got the series, and hopefully we'll have a ready Adam Hill as well as a fresh Josh Reagan to take the sweep and improve to 10-2 in SEC play....

I thought for sure we were in for a bad time when the bases got loaded with no outs. Very impressive to get out of that for the sweep

CHARLOTTE - With thunderstorms in the forecast for the Charlotte area throughout the day, Tuesday night's game between North Carolina and South Carolina at BB&T Ballpark has been postponed to Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. All tickets issued will be valid for Wednesday's game, which will pit two of the nation's top 15 teams against one another in the first of a two-year series at the home of the Charlotte Knights.

Limited standing room only tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Ballpark ticket office or online at CharlotteKnights.com.

Wednesday's game will be available on the Gamecock IMG Network including flagship station, 107.5 FM, "The Game." Television for the contest has yet to be determined.

- per their box scores, it looks like the goats use multiple pitchers for short innings of work in their mid-week games. no idea who they're starting but if past-precedent holds, the Gamecocks can expect to see quite a few arms from the goat staff in Charlotte.

tarholes dropped a weds game last week to Asheville 3-2 after beating High Point the day before. they got swept in Miami two weekends ago and took 2 of 3 at home vs Virginia Tech this past weekend, losing on Sunday.

I saw this and thought, damn really? UNC isn't ranked?

wo of the nation's top 15

But then nevermind.

Will be interesting to see how the crowd shapes up. Obviously more Heels in Charlotte but there are a lot of 'Cocks as well. UNC support for baseball isn't terrible, because of the match-up with us though they might be more interested.

Eta: also glad they only postponed it a day. Cancelling it would've sucked and I'd hate for a team like that to be thrown at the end of the schedule just before the SECT.

Yeah I just haven't been ranking opponents due to not enough room in the title.

There are going to be a lot of Gamecock fans there Wednesday night. I know for a fact that several hundred tickets were bought in a block purchase just for high rolling Gamecock fans ... I was going but when it changed by a day I had to back out because of a previous commitment. My four tickets were grabbed-up in a hurry. There are going to be a lot of Gamecock fans there. It would not surprise me if we outnumber them, our fans vs UNC's fans.

I think that we will have more, too. We nearly doubled them at the football game, and I think that our baseball fans are just as intense as football. I won't be able to go either, but I have a good many friends leaving Columbia on Wednesday to make the trip up.

targoat "probable" pitcher for Weds - LHP Hunter Williams, Soph from Virginia. (2-0) with 15 appearances/3 starts.

1.29 ERA in what's listed as just 21.0 total innings of work. 17 hits, 19 walks and 27 K's, 78 batters faced.

7 total runs given up, 3 earned. Opponents BA of .218 with 2 WP and 5 hit batters.

I'm liking the 24 free passes to 1B in just 21 innings of work. Gamecocks will hopefully take advantage.
