Info on Potential 2016 Commit Bryse Wilson.

quote:

-- Class of 2016 right-hander Bryse Wilson, who is ranked as the No. 101 player in the country by Perfect Game, visited on Saturday. He is the high school teammate of current 2016 catcher commitment Brad Debo. Wilson has offers from all of the programs in North Carolina and other big-time programs around the southeast.

We’re told his visit to Columbia over the weekend went really well but he’s not tipping his hand just yet. Wilson is supposed to make a decision either later this month or in early February and the feeling is the top two players for his commitment are South Carolina and North Carolina with N.C. State still in the running. Wilson grew up a Duke fan more than any of the other NC schools, so he doesn’t really have an allegiance to the Tar Heels or Wolfpack.

Wilson and Debo have discussed playing together and that will play a bit of a role in the decision. We’re told the Gamecocks have made a competitive offer in line with what UNC and NCSU have done.

Recruiting info on guys that attended Diamond Prospects Pro Day Tourney this past weekend:

quote:

-- Diamond Prospects, the state-wide source for baseball recruiting, held its annual Pro Day on Sunday morning at Gilbert High School. Seven future Gamecocks participated in the event: 2014s OF O’Kevius Conway, INF Madison Stokes, INF Jared Williams, OF Clark Scolamiero2015 INF LT Tolbert, OF Kep Brown, catcher Tyler Romanik2016 INF Grant Bodison.

The standout performer of the day in my eyes was Brown, who has decreased his speed since this time last year running a 6.84 60-yard dash. Last year, he was around 7.2, if memory serves. He also had trouble over the summer and into the fall with his bat as he was striking out way too much. His swing was long and he was wrapping his bat around his head. Brown’s swing looked better and he showed it during the hitting session. His arm also looked much-improved from this time last year from the outfield. Across the board, he looked like a better player - more like the guy who earned national acclaim as a freshman before trailing off his sophomore year.

The 2014 player who has made the most strides is Williams, who, as we’ve written about before, has really improved himself physically. He’s grown up and matured quite a bit and worked really hard in the weight room. While we had him clocked at 6.81 in the 60-yard dash, one scout had him at 6.74, so he was probably somewhere right in between. The coaching staff, long before this Pro Day event, has been very excited about Williams’ future at USC and his recent results have only increased that feeling.

Scolamiero ran a 6.69, which was a little bit slower than we was expecting but it was a cold and windy morning. He’s probably a low 6.6 guy right now but he’ll be into the 6.5s. He also had the best outfield arm of the day. … Tolbert ran a 7.22 in the 60 and look OK during defensive drills. He hit 90 mph off the mound though and could be able to contribute in that fashion at South Carolina. He was one of only two players to hit 90 mph from the mound. … It was good to see Conway back out on the field. He continues to make strides towards getting back to his pre-injury (ACL) form but he’s just going to have to get back into games. He’s only played a handful since fall 2012. … None of the other players really stood out in a positive way or negative way.

-- We spoke with a scout who also went by Spartanburg Methodist recently to see class of 2014 RHP Dylan Rodgers (Union/Spartanburg Methodist). He said that in his bullpen, Rodgers was 84-86 mph and hit 87 mph on his radar gun. Rodgers had a very good fall and should be the SMC ace this season. There was some talk back in the late fall that Rodgers is a guy to keep an eye on with regard to the MLB Draft. That still may be the case but he’s going to have to be better than he was the other day or he’ll be at South Carolina.

-- We talked to a couple of MLB scouts sources about what they saw at Diamond Prospects Pro Day last week, which was a showcase for pro scouts of the top high school players in the state. We put our thoughts in last week’s VIP Room but here are a few thoughts from the professional ranks.

Diamond Prospects wrote that 2014 outfielder Clark Scolamiero looks like an early round selection in the upcoming draft. In the folks we talked to, that is probably a little bit high but it was unanimous that he was the best player in South Carolina’s class and the best outfielder there. … 2014 infielder Madison Stokes was intriguing and someone to go watch this high school season but nothing to get too excited over from a pro perspective right now. … The feeling was 2014 infielder Jared Williams is going to be a “nice player” at the college level.

-- Right now, there’s not a whole lot to report on new offers or the future recruiting classes. It’s still in a holding pattern for the 2015 class. The class, we’re told, is close to full. There are only a couple more spots but we wouldn’t be surprised to see four or five more players added in time. Nothing is in the works right now though that we’re aware of.

As far as 2016s go, there are some names floating around out there but there’s not a lot happening. The coaches can’t be on the road until March 1. High school baseball practices just started today. There will be some guys crop up and the coaches will put together a plan of priorities towards the end of the month to go see in March.

-- One piece of news to pass along is right-handed pitcher Bryse Wilson committed on Sunday night to North Carolina. He picked the Tar Heels over South Carolina and N.C. State. The primary reasons were comfort level being so close to home and UNC was able to offer a better financial package.

-- We can say that 2015 outfielder T.J. Hopkins (Summerville/Summerville) came down on an unofficial visit a couple of weeks ago. He is someone that South Carolina and some other high D1s are going to track closely. Hopkins committed to College of Charleston early last summer but decided to reopen his recruitment before Christmas. Hopkins is a life-long Clemson fan and that’s where he wants to go to school but the Tigers (nor Gamecocks) have offered to this point. Hopkins is keeping his options open at this point and South Carolina has a shot at him, if they decide they want him. There’s not a lot of room left in the class though and the USC staff is going to be very selective.

Recruiting

-- South Carolina had several unofficial visitors over the weekend and the majority of them were commitments. There were a couple of intriguing uncommitted prospects and one is Bailey Meeks (Kannapolis, N.C./Home schooled). The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder plays his travel baseball with the South Charlotte Panthers. He’s a 2016 prospect who is viewed by some as a catcher but South Carolina is interested in him as a pitcher. The right-hander has been clocked at 85 mph on his fastball and is still developing on the mound. He’s a name to keep an eye on for the future.

-- Class of 2015 uncommitted outfielder T.J. Hopkins (Summerville/Summerville) made his second trip to Columbia in recent weeks to take in the games on Saturday. Hopkins is a player that South Carolina is going to see a couple of times during this high school season.

-- One of the players in town for the weekend was 2014 right-handed pitcher Tyler Johnson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal). He’s actually hit a little growth spurt and is standing close to 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds. He’s adding a little bit of velocity to his fastball and we’d expect he will sit right around 90 to 91. Johnson is starting to look the part physically.

-- Another committed visitor was 2015 right-handed pitcher Cody Morris (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), who made the trip for the weekend with his family. Morris is a potential top two round draft pick but he’s also a player who is going to put a high value on school and a college education. The early feeling is that the Gamecocks are going to have a very good shot to get him, although his draft is still 16 months away. Morris, who will keep his fastball in the 92 mph range already, has put on about 15 pounds since the summer and is up to around 205.

-- One uncommitted player we can tell you about is class of 2016 left-handed pitcher Ryne Huggins (Newberry/Newberry), who is seeing his stock grow lately. Huggins was first noticed at a pitcher camp in January by pitching coach Jerry Meyers and he was immediately intrigued. The Gamecocks have been recruiting him hard ever since and had him down for a game the opening weekend against Bucknell. Huggins, who stands 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, also plans to visit this Friday for the Clemson game.

-- Class of 2015 left-handed pitcher commitment Logan Allen (Fletcher, N.C./IMG Academy) is off to a great start for his high school season at IMG Academy. Allen, who was recently ranked as the No. 116 player in the country by Perfect Game, threw five innings and struck out 15 of the 16 hitters he faced. The only ball put into play went for a bloop single and he was up to 90 mph on the radar gun. In a relief appearance late last week, he struck out four in two innings. The competition will increase though as he is scheduled to face Bishop Verot HS, a school in Fort Myers, Fla., that will compete later this year in the National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C. Allen has put on some good weight and is up to 6-foot-2, 200 pounds.

-- Class of 2014 right-handed pitcher signee Clarke Schmidt (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) pitched four innings in a Friday night scrimmage and struck out eight and walked just one. The two runs he gave up were unearned and he topped out at 92 mph on the radar gun. A scout source who was in attendance said he threw very well, especially early in the game.

-- Class of 2015 right-handed pitcher commitment Nick Neidert (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) is scheduled for an early season test on Monday night when his team faces Milton High School, last year’s state champion, with right-handed pitcher and Vanderbilt signee Dylan Cease on the mound. Cease is projected as a top 10 overall draft pick this June. We will have eyes on this game and will bring you the latest on Neidert soon.

Recruiting

-- Class of 2016 left-handed pitcher target Ryne Huggins (Newberry/Newberry) visited South Carolina on Friday and Clemson on Sunday for the games. Huggins arrived in Columbia in the early afternoon to have an extended visit - campus tour, etc. - and stayed in town for the game. He was very much impressed by the atmosphere and the academic support that the student-athletes have.

Ryne Huggins, who is the son of former Clemson pitcher Mike Huggins, just went to the game in Clemson and visited with the coaching staff beforehand. Ryne grew up a Clemson fan and the visit rekindled some of those feelings again. South Carolina had a big early lead because of the attention they showed him early in the process. It’s going to be a fight until the end though. Huggins says he’ll wait until the summer to make a decision but we wouldn’t rule it coming sooner. Clemson assistant Bradley LeCroy and South Carolina assistant Sammy Esposito will see Huggins pitch on Monday afternoon against Saluda.

-- Class of 2015 right-handed pitcher commitment Nick Neidert (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) faced Milton High School last week, the reigning state champions and a team with several players committed to high-major schools (Vanderbilt, Clemson, Mississippi State and College of Charleston). Neidert allowed one earned run and struck out five over five innings. We were told he had a very good outing. Neidert was recruited as a pitcher and middle infielder. South Carolina likes him more as a pitcher than a position player right now though.

-- The other 2016 priority who was on campus this weekend was right-handed pitcher Duncan Callahan (Dillon/Dillon). He is the younger brother of former South Carolina signee Jamie Callahan, who signed to play professional baseball with the Boston Red Sox out of high school. Duncan isn’t pitching yet for his high school team as he’s coming back from some elbow soreness. He will be back on the mound this month though. The Gamecocks want to see him pitch a couple of times before tabling a firm offer but, as things stand today, it would be a surprise if Callahan isn’t in the fold by the end of the summer.

-- March 1 signaled the first day that coaches could get out on the road to evaluate prospects. Recruiting coordinator Sammy Esposito and pitching coach Jerry Meyers made their first trip to see class of 2016 uncommitted pitcher Ryne Huggins (Newberry/Newberry) last Monday. The left-hander is one of the top - if not the top - priority in South Carolina’s 2016 class. Huggins will visit Clemson this week and the Tigers, who also had assistant coach Bradley LeCroy at the same game, will get a shot.

-- The weather last week impacted college and high school games alike. The IP Classic is one tournament that the USC coaching staff spends some time scouting but they were unable to this year when Thursday’s games were rained out and weather was bad on Friday as well. Esposito will hit the road on Monday to see 2014 signee Clarke Schmidt (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) pitch.

-- Class of 2015 uncommitted outfielder TJ Hopkins (Summerville/Summerville) had a fairly productive weekend at the IP Classic. He didn’t get much to hit and had several walks but did extend the game against Sumter coming through with a bases loaded single down 3-1 with two outs in the last inning. Hopkins is kind of the prototypical outfielder right now as he has some size standing around 6-foot but tremendous athletic ability. He has speed and a very good arm with a patient approach at the plate. He doesn’t strike out much. Clemson and South Carolina are probably his two top schools but both are tight in numbers for the class, so both schools still want to see him play another time or two before moving too hard on him. Behind the scenes, we’re told Clemson is where he wants to go but South Carolina, if it wants to push for him, can make it interesting.

-- Class of 2015 commitment LT Tolbert (Piedmont/Wren) will be on the mound on Tuesday night for his high school team. Recruited as a shortstop at South Carolina, Tolbert has seen his stock rise a lot as a pitcher. He has been at 90 at times this year and that could be where the scouts see him in the draft next summer if he continues to develop on the mound. We have felt that Tolbert has a chance to be a first round draft pick next year as a position player but it’s still a bit too early to tell.

-- Speaking of projected first round draft picks, the early feeling is that 2014 LHP/OF signee Alex Destino could sneak into that area if his season continues at its current rate. We spoke with a scout that saw him recently who believes he will be the first player with a Gamecock connection off the board, at least based on talent level. Signability is going to be the big question with Destino that scouts are still trying to figure out.

FREE Article - 11 SC Commits/Signees on Perfect Games All American List....holy shite.

Sadly, several of these guys will likely not end up playing for SC and will be going Pro out of HS. UNCarolina has put together the highest ranked class out of anyone, but out of their 17 commitments about 6-7 are going to go Pro.

Damnit I was about to post this, just saw JW's article on it.

ETA: Whittle's thoughts on who may not make it to campus:

quote:

In short, I'd say the likelihood of Harding and Murray are low. Destino is about 50/50. Those are the main candidates right now. Webb could get in there. Same with Dylan Rodgers (a JUCO not on the list) and Madison Stokes. Those are the next three, I'd say. The rest I expect at school.

I say USC loses at least two, probably three.

-- Class of 2017 infielder Noah Campbell (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) visited South Carolina the weekend of the Brown series and left very impressed with the program. The recruiting process happens earlier for some than others and it’s obviously coming along very quickly for Campbell, a high school freshman. The son of former UNC baseball player Darin Campbell, Noah already has interest from North Carolina, N.C. State, Vanderbilt and others. Early returns are the Gamecocks and Commodores are out in front for the infielder, who attends the same high school as current Gamecock Max Schrock.

-- One of the key recruits in the 2014 class is junior college catcher signee Jared Martin (Dunwoody, Ga./Chattahoochee Valley), who is in the midst of his spring season. Martin is known more for his defense right now than he is offensively. That being said, he’s hitting .304 so far this year with a .429 on-base percentage. He had eight doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs while having more walks (10) than strikeouts (7).

-- Class of 2015 commitment Sam Finnerty (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) is off to a very good start this season for his high school team. In his most recent game, he went 3-for-4 and also pitched three innings with five strikeouts. So far this season, he has four home runs. Finnerty has added some weight and is up to 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds but one of his best attributes has always been his speed, which he’s maintained with the new weight. It’s up in the air whether Finnerty will be more of a pitcher or a hitter at the college level but the staff likes his arm and his athleticism in the outfield. He’s built a lot like current Gamecock Joey Pankake.

-- Class of 2016 LHP target Ryne Huggins (Newberry/Newberry) visited Clemson last week and had a great trip but did not commit. It was also a good sign for the Gamecocks that Huggins came down to Columbia on Saturday for the game against Ole Miss on an unofficial visit. It will probably be a back and forth battle between the Gamecocks and Tigers with a decision coming, he says, in the summer. In a start on Friday night, Huggins allowed one earned run over seven innings and struck out 14.

-- Class of 2014 RHP signee Braden Webb (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) threw his second no-hitter of the season on Friday and struck out 15.

-- There may be news soon on 2015 uncommitted outfielder TJ Hopkins (Summerville/Summerville) as coaches from both South Carolina and Clemson will be by his game on Monday night at White Knoll. The numbers - scholarship and roster size - are tight for both programs in the 2015 class and both programs want to watch him play at least one more time before figuring out how big of a priority he is for their respective classes.

A former College of Charleston commitment, Hopkins reopened his recruitment with the hopes of going to an SEC or ACC school. He is ranked as the second-best outfielder in the state by Diamond Prospects behind South Carolina commitment Kep Brown (Mt. Pleasant/Wando).

-- Speaking with sources in the scouting community, the heat is turning down a little bit on 2014 signees OF Clark Scolamiero (Greenville/Greenville) and LHP/OF Alex Destino (Weaverville, N.C./North Buncombe). That isn’t to say that both players are definitely coming to school but the chances are rising that it does happen.

-- Right-handed pitcher signee Clarke Schmidt (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) threw a complete game on Thursday and didn’t allow an earned run. He struck out 13 and allowed only three hits over his seven innings of work. He was sitting comfortably in the upper 80s but topped out at 91 mph.

-- A few other little notes … Class of 2015 RHP commitment Cody Morris (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) made his first appearance of the year over the weekend and struck out eight in three innings of work. … Class of 2015 commitment Tyler Romanik was recently changed by Diamond Prospects from a catcher to first baseman in their rankings. There has been some question as to whether or not he could catch at the college level and it seems as though the prevailing thought is he’s going to have to play a corner infield position. First base is most likely but we wouldn’t completely rule out third base. Romanik was recruited because he is a tremendous hitter though, not because he was a catcher. Chris Cullen (Cumming, Ga./West Forsyth) was recruited and committed as the catcher in the 2015 class. … Word from the scouting community right now is signee Madison Stokes also looks like a college guy. We will continue to keep an eye out on him and while he’s not looking to sign just for the sake of signing, the bonus demand isn’t going to be as high as a Destino or Scolamiero.

That's the dream, getting guys like Wil Crowe to turn down huge 7 figure deals is very rare. Of the 8 1st and 2nd Team All Americans we have committed I would only expect 3 to sign with Carolina. Most likely all the 1st team guys will go pro and I don't blame them. We have some awesome recruiters but paper is paper.
