Both of these guys are big pickups, and Bodison is a national prospect. He's rated as the 10th best SS, #52 Overall nationally and #1 player in SC for that class. He's the kinda of player who might get a sweet Pro contract and skip college, but who knows, after Crowe anything is possible.

Cayce, any thought on putting these guys position or national rankings on the 1st page summary?

I'll probably start including that when I see it posted in articles and stuff. I'll add it here in a few mins.

Destino brings home gold

quote:

Class of 2014 baseball commitment Alex Destino (Weaverville, N.C./North Buncome) was handpicked from a national pool of players to participate in the Tournament of the Stars over the summer, which is the first round of tryouts for the U-18 USA Baseball National Team. From that group of 144, he made the cut down to 40. Then he was one of 24 players selected to go to Taichung, Taiwan.

“Being on the United States team, words can’t explain being able to represent your country,” Destino said.

Destino, who pitched at hit throughout the tournament, got the ball on the mound in the semifinals against Japan.

He picked up the win in his only decision throwing six innings allowing two runs on our hits and a walk. He struck out four during his 88-pitch start.

“I was honored to pitch against Japan,” Destino said. “Getting to see that style of play was unbelievable. People say that they have a slap approach, which is completely true, but those kids do not strike out. That made me a better pitcher focusing on pitching to contact because in the back of your mind, you knew it was going to take your best stuff to strike him out and you don’t have that all the time.”

Over the course of the tournament, Destino threw 11 1-3 innings. He allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and five walks. He struck out 11 during his two starts and three relief appearances while posting a 3.97 earned run average.

At the plate, the left-hander was the team’s second-leading hitter putting up a .375 average. He hit in six of his Team USA’s games driving in five runs while scoring a pair.

“I was satisfied,” Destino said of his performance. “Traveling to a hostile environment like that and having success at all was good for me. I loved it, soaked it all in and had a lot of fun out there.”

“It was a different feeling going somewhere that definitely wasn’t here; wasn’t the United States,” Destino said. “It was a blast. It was a culture shock but I loved it. I soaked it all in and it was a blast.”

“I want to physically get better, which every player wants to do but mentally, I want to get a grasp of my mental game this year,” Destino said. “On the mound, keeping within myself and not stressing about the little things. At the plate, not worry so much about the strikeout. I just want to work on my mental approach for the next level.”

He will, however, have an immediate opportunity to play at the next level, if he so desires. He’s currently ranked as the No. 7 left-handed pitcher nationally in his recruiting class by Perfect Game sporting a low-90s fastball and a good feel for his offspeed pitches.

A pitcher that's hitting .375 in the World Championship, nice.

Did some research, pretty little info out there if you don't have a premium account for Perfect Game but I ended up getting maybe 7-8 guys position/overall rankings.

-- Uncommitted 2015 pitcher/utility player Nick Neidert (Acworth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) was probably the best player that the Gamecocks are targeting. Against Marucci, one of the better programs nationally, he pitched into the seventh inning and struck out 11. He was as high as 91 on the radar gun and showed a good slider. He also has a loopier curveball that he drops in some, too.Neidert is down to South Carolina and Clemson and there are people who are pushing him both ways.

-- Class of 2015 right-handed pitcher Cody Morris (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) showed plus stuff that may see him move up in the next set of Perfect Game rankings. Morris was up to 94 mph on the radar gun and sat in the low 90s. We profiled his gain in velocity in a VIP Room a couple of weeks back. Over the summer, he was touching 90-92 but sat in the upper 80s to 90. After some time off and some strength work, he has added a couple of MPHs in his 6-foot-4 frame.

-- Class of 2015 right-handed pitcher commit Harrison Smith (Wando/Wando) sat in the mid 80s with his fastball in two relief appearances on the same day. He’s typically an upper 80s guy. Perfect Game scout David Rawnsley noted that Smith had a “hammer curveball that was his most impressive pitch.”

-- We’re told that 2015 commitment Sam Finnerty pitching against the Canes and for East Coast Baseball, was impressive as well. He was 84-87 on the mound with a 12-6 curveball. It’s up in the air whether he will be an outfielder or pitcher at South Carolina but he has the ability to play either position at a high level.

-- There were a couple of 2016s who jumped off the page and should earn an offer from South Carolina. Right-handed pitcher Tyler Mondile (Wenonah, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) was consistently at 90-91 during his outing, which caught the eye of several college coaches, including Esposito. The other was right-handed pitcher Christopher Machamer (North Canton, Ohio/Washington), who is ranked as the No. 29 player in his class. He was upper 80s topping at 91 mph and struck out 12 during his seven innings of work. Both players are from outside of South Carolina’s typical recruiting region but both are said to at least have some interest in the Gamecocks.

The 2015 class is coming to a close as right-handed pitcher Nick Neidert (Lawrenceville, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) committed to South Carolina on Thursday night.

Neidert chose the Gamecocks over Vanderbilt, Georgia, and Clemson. He had visits set up to see the Tigers and Commodores over the next two weekends but those visits have been canceled.

Ranked as the No. 139 player in the country by Perfect Game, Neidert struck out 12 over seven innings in a performance in Fort Myers, Fla. over the weekend. He hit 91 mph on the radar gun, which made interest in him spike among college coaches. South Carolina, however, has been a fixture for Neidert over the last several months and he decided the time was right to pull the trigger.

It's great getting guys ranked so high to commit. The problem is keeping them. Many of them will get offered attractive Pro contracts out of HS.

South Carolina picked up a commitment from 2014 Spartanburg Methodist first baseman Collin Steagall. Steagall prepped at Lexington High School and stands 6-foot-1, 240 pounds.

Collin Steagall committed on Saturday morning to pitching coach Jerry Meyers, who saw him on a recent trip to Spartanburg Methodist. In that game, Steagall hit a home run and a double. Shows great power from the left side. He's always hit wherever he's been and will be the cleanup hitter for SMC this season.

Defensively, Steagall is listed as a first baseman but right now, he's more of a DH-type. Once USC gets him on campus, they may be able to get him to the point he could be a first baseman. He's got some defensive tools but just needs to trim up a bit and be a little bit more athletic. USC has some good players at first base and he was recruited for his bat. Anything defensively would be a bonus.

haha, I know Steagall's uncle, he's a diehard tarhole fan. I asked him how excited he was that his nephew was going to play for the "Carolina Baseball team." He still hasn't responded to me.

Haven't heard any info on the kid yet, will update when I find out something.

From JW:

quote:

I don't have a lot of additional detail on Cromer at this point. He's a tall, projectable lefty who hovers around 80 mph at this point with his fastball. He's the son of former South Carolina baseball player Tripp Cromer, who was drafted in the third round of the MLB Draft in 1988 and played in the major leagues off and on from 1993 to 2003.

Cromer will compete for one of the walk-on spots while at South Carolina.
