You're right about everything except having to worry about Pettway in the NFL next year.

I'm convinced he is slowed down by injury or hasn't fully recovered his speed yet.
He played at this weight last year at a higher BF% and looked significantly quicker

This tells me that we have no idea what we want to do on offense. Basically Gus is feeling the pressure to get his offense moving and so I think he's naturally trying to go back to a point where the offense last experienced sustained success. That being the period last season where KP came on strong. The problem with that strategy though is that this isn't the same team as last year, and trying to recapture the magic isn't going to work. He is compounding the problem by simplifying the offense. You can't take away the nuts and bolts of your offensive philosophy and expect it to run. The hurry up part of the HUNH is for the most part non existent. The motions and window dressings designed to confuses defenses and create mismatches are pretty much gone as well. Now we've moved beyond that to screwing with player rotations, which further limits us offensively because different backs have different strengths. So combine all of that with a passing game that is one dimensional, doesn't attack different parts of the field, doesn't take advantage of short quick underneath yards and is severely lacking in any complexity and you get the complete shite show that is currently the auburn offense.
My honest opinion is that Gus can't fix the offense. He's more or less locked in to what he is doing now. He can't go back to the 09 or 10 playbook because it would be such a radical departure from the offense today. At 4 games into the season, that could end spectacularly bad. My guess is that they try to manage the season and hope to find enough offense to eek out some wins.
