Arky and Ole Miss defenses: what the hell happened?

At the end of the 2014 season, the Pigs were #10 nationally in total defense and #9 in scoring defense. Meanwhile, the blACKBeARS were #13 in ypg and #1 in ppg - both units were at or near the top of the SEC in every defensive category.
Fast forward some 21 months, and in total defense Arky is #84 and Ole Freeze is #107, and the two squads are tied at #88 in scoring.
Same HCs, DCs, pretty much same staffs - what went wrong?

We're just not very good. Have a ways to go.

Can't speak for Arkansas but OM is just younger and not as talented.
Lost AA safety Trae Elston, AA DT Nkemdiche and unanimous AA selection Senquez Golson at CB off that 2014 D.

We were not expecting our defense to implode against the run, i still don't get it and it's a real head scratcher. Our OL, our biggest question mark before the season began is struggling to say the least. We are not improving on the OL at all, new lineman are getting their azz handed to them.....

Had plenty of time to replace him. Not much of an excuse anymore.

Ole Miss - no longer getting an incredibly disproportional lucky amount of turnovers, lost the paid players on their team that happened to be the best ones. Still playing 220 lbs players on the defensive line.

Discipline. It's college football, not the military.

Bacon OL is hot garbage.

I was told before the season there wouldn't a be a huge drop off in the Ole Miss defense

riggierayreb, is it fair to say that a lack of quality depth has been a factor? From LSU's experience we know that takes time to develop & it wasn't until Coach Miles finally got some that we went on that winning streak, culminating in that 13-0 regular season. ( that "other" game never happened in our history books). Saw a lot of players limping off, did not notice many returning. How banged up are you for the rest of the season? That player who was booted from the bench by a coach, according to the broadcasters, what is his status, any flack coming from that? A fun crowd pre game, reminded me of the old Johnny Reb/Fighting Tigers days.

Maybe if ole miss defenders would stop fighting each other and play they wouldn't be so shitty

The narrative that Hugh Freeze cheats is laughable when you look at our depth chart.
