...Storied!

Great story of you haven't seen it. Amazing when you think that it wasn't that long ago that blacks couldn't even play in the SEC!

Hey bro, you can't play football for us because we don't let people with your skin color represent our University, but you're a hell of an athlete so Goodluck. Sounds like a hell of a time to be alive

Just amazing. A physical badass (came back against UCLA), first black QB in the SEC, could escape anything and catch players from behind, Was/is as classy as Dobbs. Just a trailblazer who should've been give a high pick in the NFL.

Dobbs nearly caught the UGA player from behind (near 100 yards too), shares his slippery nature and class. JFF at his best was somewhat similar though, imo, Dobbs more. BUT really there's no on like him. Shame he never really made the NFL.

I was only 5 when he was at UT so I don't remember ever watching him play.

I never got a chance to see him but have watched tons of film on him. We are blessed to have him here today. Proud he gave a s/o to McLain.

And yeah his daughter is gorgeous.

Nat Northington of Kentucky was the first black player in the SEC. First game was in 1967, so next year will be the 50th anniversary of SEC integration.

That's an oversimplification. Bama integrated in 1967, but didn't have black starters until 1971 with John Mitchell and Wilbur Jackson. 1971 was the same year Holloway came to Tennessee. It wasn't that Bama wouldn't allow blacks to play for them by that point, it was about not letting a black person play quarterback. The racist mental block around black QBs is well-documented and was incredibly silly.

My comment wasn't directed at Bama. More the shitty mindset that had infected that time period and many of the people in it.

At least Bear Bryant was honest with Holloway about being able to play QB at Alabama, gotta respect that.

Sure did beat us in the Bluebonnet Bowl. He was great and one of my favorite Vols!
