SEC academics

Outside of a few schools, the SEC isn't really known for academics, and the MS schools pull up the rear. But what needs to happen to make them better? Is it a money thing? I'd like to see the SEC public schools be mentioned with schools like UVA and Michigan someday, and especially my beloved MSU, but with the state standardizing admissions with such low standards, I don't know if it'll ever happen

It is just something that takes time. A lot of these states did not have a long legacy of academics. Also, the purpose of the schools isn't to attract smart kids from out of state, educate them, and send them somewhere else. It is a service to the state and honestly much of the south wasn't known for high school education for a long time. But I think you are seeing some of the schools (Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Bama, aTm, Missouri, etc.) really gaining steam.

TI says it's all about the money

Have to change the scope of the entire academic system within each state. The Virginia's and Michigan's are that way because they LEAD discovery and research...while other schools just teach the things that others have already discovered.
To fix it....lots of Money. Reform entire education systems. Tons of work.

There are so many factors, the biggest of which is the public education at the elementary and high school levels in these states have always lagged behind. State schools can't just turn their backs on the students within their own state, so when they're pulling 60-70% of their students from a state already lagging behind other regions, it's hard to bring the reputation up. Schools like Michigan and Virginia(from your example) are able to recruit more nationally, both because of higher standards that shut out some state students, and reputation.
I know Bama has ramped up their out of state recruiting over the past decade. But until the state improves its public education at the lower levels, it's never going to be a prestigious university. Still a good school with some great programs, but never one that can be that selective in who they accept.

Academics are fine, its the research as a whole, the SEC is lacking

Exactly this. We aren't paying for oos merit scholars to get educated. We're paying for Texans to get educated for cheap in Texas.

Except for A&M and UF, I agree

Yes, those two and Vandy are the Big 3, but UK and Mizzou are growing their research programs, too. UK's medical research program is attracting lots of positive attention.
The UK Markey Cancer Center received the prestigious National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation in 2013. A $265 million Health Science Research Building is under construction:
It's research that mainly distinguishes Big Ten schools from SEC schools. The amount of federal research dollars that goes to Big Ten institutions is staggering. Some SEC schools are now competing for those dollars. All of our conference schools need to get in the game.

The SEC just needs to keep doing what they've been doing ... don't worry about the academic snobs. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
SCAR is probably the next institution to become AAU accredited ... other than that, the SEC is doing just fine.

Are we talking about academics for the normal student body or the athletes?

Last time I checked they were both in the SEC.

11 SEC schools are ranked as R1: Doctoral Universities - Highest Research Activity. The other three are ranked R2.
The only thing holding us back from more of the research dollars is competing for them. SEC schools are growing rapidly and our academics are good and getting better. It's time to take the next step.

I know Auburn and Miss State are R2, who is the other one? Wait, is it Alabama?

Yup. Most of the research performed by the UA system is as UAB (R1) since the UA School of Medicine is now based on their campus.
