Fran started 3 freshmen on the oline. Evan Mathis is one I remember.

Was Shaud Williams on that team?
Yeah. That 2002 team was loaded at runningback.
Shaud Williams, Santonio Beard, Ahmaad Galloway, Ray Hudson.

Saban was also a more experienced and educated coach when he came to Alabama. I tremble thinking of the monster LSU would be if Saban were still there.
Maybe but I really think his failure with the Dolphins made him even more determined & focused in his return back to the collegiate game. Without that extra motivation, I'm not quite that sure he is as successful in the long term.

I agree Sabans short stint in the NFL made him re-evaluate his mindset on being a college coach. I also am in the minority that thinks Saban could have been a success in the NFL if he were allowed to run the show and not be a manager of the cards he is dealt. Saban is the CEO type, who wants to lay everything out as he wants it, not have someone above him say "Here is this, make it work".

The major flaw that Fran had was his ego. He started to believe the press and the praises that they gave him after his first year. It wasn't him. It was the players that wanted to win so bad, and they helped him look good. If Tyler Watts had not been hurt and he was forced to play Zow, we would not have won the iron bowl that first year. Andrew Zow won that game for Bama and it made Fran look good, good enough for A&M to want him. A&M was crazy to want to spend that kind of money on a coach with no better record than he had, so frankly they got what they deserved when they got him.
He was a major jerk and thought a lot more of himself than he did his players. The way that he left Bama players was inexcusable. That act alone should have told A&M something about his character.
He was crazy to think that he was moving on to bigger and better things and that Bama would be forgotten. Look at what Bama has done, and at what he has done.

Well, I don't really blame him for leaving Bama. OUr administration wasn't 100% honest with him about the NCAA investigation and what it could mean to the program. Though I think they were mostly in denial and naive about it themselves.
Though I was somewhat pissed at the time, I am so glad he left. Looking back he was an awful recruiter, and an even worse evaluator of talent. He would have done way worse than Shula did during those probation years.

That's why he's been at Texas State for 5 years: no openings are worthy of his greatness. Or his subscription newsletter.

Didnt Shaud take one 80 on the 1st 0 play against the Razorbacks?

Bama made Fran look better than what he really was(kinda like Shula). He was a good but NOT a great coach...
He was exposed at A&M and that 77-0 arse raping by Stoops was a thing of beauty!!!
frick Fran!!

Honestly, after Fran bailed, I wish we had just kept Torbush as head coach.

Obviously I have to go with the thoughts of the Alabama and Texas A&M fans in the thread, but I always thought he was a good coach.

He must hate himself for leaving Alabama.
