Tennessee officials had a preliminary conversation with Butler coach Chris Holtmann on Friday regarding its vacant head coaching position, sources familiar with the discussions said.
The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly, said representatives for Tennessee and Holtmann had contact in the hours since Tennessee officially fired Donnie Tyndall.
Although the discussion was preliminary, there is mutual interest between Tennessee and Holtmann, the sources said. Holtmann is believed to be one of several, or perhaps many, candidates for the vacancy.
Holtmann just completed his first season at Butler, going 23-11 and losing to Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32.

So he's basically the college basketball version of Butch Jones? Win a lot of games with their predecessor's recruits but is unproven building a program on their own.

Correct. We could make a worse hire but I wouldn't love this.

From looking at his head coaching record he doesn't seem like much of a program builder was at Gardner-webb for 3 years and he didn't do to much there until his final year where he finished 2nd in the conference and made it to the CIT and now he's only been at Butler for a year and made it to the 3rd round personally I don't want him.

I have a coworker whose son plays for him (comes off the bench) and loves the guy. He had considered both Xavier and Providence and it was Holtmann that convinced him to come to Indy.

It's amazing how little the people in charge care. They clearly want to do as little as possible.

Tennessee really did Alabama a favor by hiring Hart away. He would have taken over for Moore, had he stayed. I was pissed because Hart took some great support staff with him.

I am seriously starting wonder if Dave Hart is legitimately trying to single handedly destroy Tennessee's athletics programs.

Of course he is. He has two degrees from Alabama, now he runs athletics for one of his alma mater's oldest rivals. I graduate from Tennessee this year, if in 35 years down the road I'm offered the Alabama AD I'd tank them too.

You son of a bitch. I have this bookmarked, so in 35 years when Alabama offers you the AD job, you are fricked.

As much as I hate you guys, I doubt you would ever willingly hire a guy with a Tennessee degree to run athletics like we were dumb enough too, although your current AD Battle was at one time our head football coach before he was fired for running us into the ground in the 70s.
