Wasn't that long ago a UA professer was killed by a student.

And, considering that as cited before CC permit holders are about 10x less likely to commit a crime of any kind... from DUI, to murder... it seems logical that getting a permit and carrying should indeed be encouraged.

Hell, it should probably be required. Make everyone get a CC permit which includes a criminal background check and a mental health background check plus courses on firearm safety and making sure they can actually use a weapon before they can purchase a firearm.

Wouldn't that be a fantastic idea

Of course we won't get into cause and effect.

i understand the point of your post but i can't help but cringe at this sentence.

it just seems that type of thought is a catch all retort for anything men deem unfair. where are all these feminist circles that supposedly exist?

Article didn't say. I'm not anti gun but not an NRA absolutist either. Guns on campus just sound like a bad idea, and forcing the UA to do so makes even less sense. These are the kind of ideas that can bite you in the arse big time.

As far as the military, when I was in if you lived in barracks personal weapons had to be checked into an arms room and not allowed in lockers or vehicles. May have changed that was a long time ago.

It didn't have to, it's currently illegal to carry on campus. This goes to JQ's point that if a person is determined to cause a another harm then they will disregard the law on gun free zones.

I'm don't necessarily advocate students carrying on campus, particularly considering it's illegal to carry at sporting events. You would be opening a can of worms based on that fact alone. My argument is to the benefit of conceal carry/gun ownership in general.

This is the worst pseudo-argument that pro gun folks use, and they always use it. Laws are deterrents. People don't always respect laws, and that's why there are consequences.

Saying we don't need laws because criminals will break them anyway is a fool's argument.

Where did anyone say there shouldn't be a law? It's a law that a person has to have a permit to conceal carry. All the permit does is allow those of us who are law abiding citizens to protect ourselves from those who disregard the law.

The most used argument from pro gun people, and the only one that is needed, is the constitutional right to bear arms.

So, back to the original point: if you have to be 21 years old to have a CC license, allowing CC on campus isn't going to protect girls from getting raped in dorms.

Well, it would not help a girl who was not 21. But then again who is to say she could not have a shotgun in her dorm? 18 to own.

I have to laugh at all the charts posted above though, I mean, absolutely no context... just some random numbers gathered by who knows who, who knows when, and with who knows what agenda.

There is a crime culture in America, its not just about guns. Its about people being put in terrible situations, and media glorifying gang violence, etc.

Something like 10-12% of criminals get their guns used to commit crimes legally. Most of the time they are bought underground, stolen, etc. You do not see otherwise law abiding citizens waltzing into gun shops, passing background checks, and then going and murdering someone with the gun.

The beauty of the United States is that we have the FREEDOM to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our property. I choose to do so with a $3,000 Wilson Combat 1911. If you would like to do it with your cell phone, by calling the police if your front door gets kicked in, then by all means that is your right. I have loaded firearms safely stored in various places around my house, surprisingly, none of them has ever escaped and killed anyone.

Laws are not deterrents to someone who intends to break the law.

If law was such a big deterrent, there would not be nearly as many murders.

Sorry, but if you think for one second people who are selling meth and crack, and have killed... or are going to kill people, give a shite about being in a gun free zone with a loaded handgun, you live in liberal lalaland.

The ONLY people who care about gun laws, are LAW ABIDING citizens. Because they dont want to break the law. Why would I give a shite if they slapped a misdemeanor firearms possession charge on me after I killed 5 people?

Yeah, awesome, we'll have 18 year old girls in dorm rooms who have shotguns sitting underneath piles of dirty clothes, discarded textbooks, and lost socks. That's gonna stop a rapist.

I can't wade through most of this stuff, but there's a good chance some sort of legislation will make it through that shrinks gun-free zones, including K-12 schools.

The AP has a short blurb about it here: LINK

quote:

By ALLEN REED
Published: Yesterday
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas' gun-free zones would drastically shrink under a bill to allow concealed weapons at bars, churches, schools, polling locations, local government meetings, the state Capitol and other prohibited places.

Republican Rep. Dan Sullivan of Jonesboro said Tuesday that his omnibus gun bill modifies various sections of state law to expand on places where people with concealed carry licenses can bring their weapons.

The bill would allow K-12 faculty or staff to bring their firearms onto school property but not into classrooms. It would allow firearms at sporting events not hosted by schools or universities. Liquor stores, highway department buildings, and the Arkansas Justice Building where the state Supreme Court meets would no longer be gun-free areas.

quote:

Other gun bills have gained traction in the Republican-controlled Legislature. A proposal to force public universities to allow guns on campus cleared a House committee Monday, and a lawmaker has filed a "stand your ground" bill to expand the legal justifications for someone to use deadly force in self-defense rather than retreating. Republicans are hopeful that their numbers combined with a governor with strong National Rifle Association ties will result in a pro-gun session.

This is going to be a disaster. It's going to be way easier to steal guns from dorm rooms and cars and everywhere else. Arming teachers is silly, because it's just going to lead to students getting a hold of a gun or a teacher pulling it out when threatened.

quote:

Sullivan said the change was suggested to him by constituents, some of whom don't feel his proposal goes far enough. He said he's trying to strike a balance for what's appropriate for the state.

"It's intended to be a starting place for conversation," Sullivan said. "To say this bill will pass as-is is not reflective of the reality of where the state of Arkansas is right now."

I think that some people won't be happy until they've been deputized as "good people with power" who are legally allowed to control a situation.

Let's face it.. if you're not allowed to carry a gun into a liquor store the terrorists have already won.

I'm all for the right to bear arms, but this literally scares the shite out of me.

I have a lot to say about this topic, but it won't solve anything. I'll just leave it at allowing CC on campus/dorms sounds like a really bad idea (for students).

BTW, I own 2 handguns myself, I'm very pro-2nd Amendment.

Yeah I am pro 2nd amendment myself, but I just don't think we need guns in schools and dorm rooms.
