Oddly I found myself pulling for SC last night and I think I understand why. We know how to beat SC and historically do if for no other reason we generally recruit better and just have better athletes on our team. What bothers me is I had a sick feeling that our defense would not have fared any better vs A&M's prolific passing attack since I'm pretty sure our secondary will be one of our weak links.

We have always heard that defense wins championships and this has been true in the SEC to a large extent. But clearly there is a trend in the SEC towards more wide-open offense to the extent that without it, teams won't be able to compete. The days of conservative/safe offense are over and the champion of this concept, Nick Saban, sees the handwriting on the wall which is why he hired Lane Kiffin to instill some innovation in Bama's offense.

This actually provides some insight into the contrast between Sumlin and Spurrier's offense. Spurrier has been snapping off quips about Saban working too hard aka living in his office but it's pretty obvious that Spurrier isn't putting much effort into coaching these days. Sumlin's offense is clearly more innovative and it showed big time last night. From what I saw of the game, Thompson had plenty of time to throw on most downs but there was little or no creativity in getting receivers open.

Agreed, me & a buddy were commenting that Thompson really had trouble throwing short & intermediate routes - obviously the deep ball worked a couple of times.

Without Davis, SC looked anemic. I have to say I thought Thompson would play much better based on last season but I'm sure he will step up his game against us.

The football team in South Carolina scares me. Let's not forget that they have an offensive genius as a head coach and a stout defense......

Thank goodness we don't play Charleston Southern!
61-9 in their first game.

That game in Columbia still scares me. Their D looked bad and Thompson looked a little jittery, but I still have flashbacks of 2012 in Columbia. Keep in mind, our D is a big unknown and we're starting a first time 5th year SR, too. We have some parallels to them and I hope we don't come out flat like they did.

I think they're better than they played and we better come into Columbia strapped up and ready for a fight.

I admit I was wondering how our defense would have looked against a team playing like TAMU last night. I'm not only concerned about our secondary, I still have doubts about the defensive front. In a fast paced game, especially in the heat, I just don't see enough depth to keep the big guys fresh. If our offense can be successful grinding out long drives, then that's not a huge problem, but if teams can force us into a shootout, it could be a problem.

All of this...I wish they would have lost by like 7 or 3.. Luckily we dont have to play them right after that game, but yeah they'll be ready for us no doubt. I'm glad our game is at 3:30, too.

I enjoyed watching Thompson berate his receivers after all of his off-target throws. SC has no O line, no DBs and no QB.

I wouldn't read too much into that game. AM was on fire, just like they were when they beat us down 2 years.

Don't think we are going to roll all over them.

We still have a bye week for Scar and they play E. Carolina who has historically given them fits. Gives Pruitt just alittle more time to gameplan.
