Had ingrowns on both sides of both big toes removed, and the nail bed was burned away with acid. Anyone had this? What can I expect as far as recovery time goes? Once the lidocaine wore off today, it felt horrible.

I had it done to both of my big toes. I played a football game the next day after I had it done to both sides of the big toe on my right foot. It bled like a stuck pig, but it was not that uncomfortable to me.

nail bed was burned away with acid
So the nail is never coming back?

Had both big toes done in 1990. A great decision given the amount of pain, annoyance, etc. I experienced. 25 years later still think it was a great decision as I have been pain free. Side of the nail that was hit with the acid has never grown back.
Recovery when I had it done was a couple of weeks and the worst (painful) thing was cleaning out the grooves left by the part of the ingrown nail that was removed. That hurt like a mother.........otherwise all was good.

Had this done when I was a kid. They hurt like hell trying to play sports.
I might be way off because it's been awhile, but I don't think I took more than a few days to a week before I was running again. Soaked in Epsom salts and kept the bandages changed. Never had a problem since.

had the same done to my left big toe a few years ago. Said the nail would never grow back. 6 months later...my nail grew back. Which meant 6 months later....ingrown toe

I had it when I was a kid. It didn't work, but they don't hurt anymore, so I guess that's cool. Maybe the acid just killed the pain receptors.
Trimming those frickers is a bitch to this day, though.

How can this be healthy long term? Not having a nail has to be bad somehow, doesn't it?

It's supposed to make it so they grow correctly like normal people. It didn't work in my case, but it doesn't hurt anymore so I'm happy.
ETA: The nail is just gone until it grows back, hopefully correctly.
