Both have football legend fathers and would be better off with their dads sitting on a bar stool calling plays.
Who will be the guy to revive your program? Bobby Petrino? Or is he more likely to go to Aubie or UK?

Shula is at least a successful QB coach. What has Dooley really done?

Dooley's press conferences are MUCH better than Shula's were.

He's been called "our Mike Shula" by many since he was hired. In to clean up the program until they bring someone else in.

If AU loses to OM, a deal will be struck with Petrino before someone else gets him.

i thought shula was a good recruiter talent wise. he just ran a lax program and allowed an environment to exist that did not put team or winning first. dooley may be a better coach but i question his recruiting prowess. overall, i think dooley is better and if he can get the hosses on defense he can compete.

If I remember right, Shula had trouble late in games as well...hmmmm....

While I agree it does take time to change the stigma that hangs over your program after the Kiffin debacle. UT just needs to hire a good DC and recruit better in the trenches. Like UGA, you guys get top skill players but also like Georgia are recruiting well enough up front. We've done better on the DL over the last few years but still don't have what it takes on the OL to have a consistent running game; the Vols seem to be in the same boat.

UT is still nowhere near where they need to be depth wise to compete with the big boys every week. Dooley went all-in on WRs last draft class, and in the process lost out on some good LBs and DLs...to teams in the SEC!

As this has been discussed over the years, I've said that while I never thought Dooley would succeed, I didn't think he would be as bad as Shula. I may be wrong about that.

Shula also was an offensive coordinator in the NFL for four years. I don't think Dooley's been a coordinator at any level, college or pro. It's a terrible idea to hire a head coach who's never been a coordinator at any level. For every Urban Meyer, there are a thousand Jon Embrees and Derek Dooleys who end up being completely in over their head as HCs.

Shula was a better coach. He at least got a 10 win season and beat UF.
