There's at least 2-3 morbidly obese softball players on every SEC team it seems. And it's been that way for as long as I can remember.
They're pretty much always first basemen or pitchers. There are plenty of fat baseball players too at thos positions. But in softball, when the base paths in are like 60 feet as opposed to 90 and it's 220 to dead center and 200 to left/right fields, it doesn't really matter as much how fat they are when they don't have to run far and don't have to hit it far to hit it out of the ballpark. But most softball players are in good shape from what I've seen, and there are quite a few very attractive players on every team.

45. My point is that if you ask the average American who Jenny Finch is no one is gonna know who you are talking about.

The whiff rate in baseball is about 20%.
On average, a player hits the ball 80% of the time.
There is some 100 year old delusion that hitting a pitch is the hardest thing to do in sports.
Watch Pro's versus Joe's. It was actually one of the easier tasks.
I have no doubt that softball players can look good up at the plate against big league pitchers (making contact)
Man to man coverage on a former wide receiver? Near impossible.
Don't know why you're getting downvoted. This is 100% truth. For years I've heard the argument that hitting a MLB pitcher is the hardest thing in sports and they cite batting average, which is dumb. The overwhelming majority of at bats have contact with the ball at least once. The difficult part is hitting the ball where there isn't a defender close enough to make a play. The rules of the game (number of defenders on the field) is what drives the lack of success in getting a "hit", not inability to make contact with the ball.

That's like 2 fat guys in mlb over 30 years.
Dude, there are a lot more fat guys than that
I could take any 25 man roster right now and find 2-3 or more fat guys on there.

It's the least athletic of all the major sports.
meh, it's position specific just like it is in other sports like football. Baseball outfielders, infielders that don't play first base, and catchers are all very athletic. Most first basemen are too, although some are fat. Pitchers are hit or miss. In football you have plenty of DL and OL that eat up space and are athletic for their size but still obese. There are plenty of QBs that move horribly in the pocket but can simply throw a football well. Basketball has guys that wouldn't be doing anything athletically if they weren't 7 feet tall. The only sports you're not going to find "fat" guys are sports like soccer where everyone is expected to be in shape and run.

Also to the guy who said MLB players couldn't hit softball pitching, you need to settle down a bit. Give them a week and they would demolish softball pitching. You can give these girls a lifetime and they aren't going to hit MLB pitching or even NCAA baseball pitching.

Pujols, Piazza, and Giles tried to hit a 68mph pitch from Jennie Finch in 2018 and all failed! Badly!
softballs come from a completely different angle than a baseball does. Give them a little time to practice, and they'd crush softball pitching.

Where have you been? There are plenty of girls playing baseball. Many of the college fastpitch players played baseball, but transferred to softball so they could play in college.
Are you saying a girl can hit a 70 mph ball from 43 feet, but can't hit a 90 mph ball from 60 feet away? I think with practice they could do the same, just as I believe if a baseball player practiced he could hit a fastpitch.
Made the comment about MLB players not being able to hit a pitch from Jenne Finch because one of the posters was saying that fastpitch softball was easy.

at the college or MLB level, which was what you responded to? Care to list all the girls playing NCAA or MLB baseball? I'm not too interested in a girl playing high school baseball against kids pitching 70 mph

Yes, I'm saying a girl would not be able to hit college or professional pitching. Little league pitchers are throwing the equivalent of 90+ mph pitches with how close the mound is, and I don't think little league players could hit MLB/college pitching either

Given a modicum of practice, MLB and college players would crush the best softball pitchers.

Total nonsense. When my sons were playing 11-12 year old baseball the best pitchers were already hitting 72-75, and we managed to hit the ball. Really tired of hearing parents who live vicariously through their daughters claim that their softball teams could beat any baseball teams. Just not realistic....

The pitching distance is the most overused argument of all time.
How much bigger is a softball and how much more movement is on a baseball?
An MLB pitcher can throw a ball that looks like is going to hit you dead in the face and it curves into the outside of the strike zone.
The softball cannot move that much with its size and distance from the plate.

don't think this softball mom understands the physics of softball v baseball or the human physiological differences between males and females. Baseball players who throw flat, 90+ mph pitches don't last very long. There's a lot bigger difference between the two sports than simply how fast the ball is moving when it crosses the plate

Well I would just have her explain why fast pitch men's league softball pitches from further back than the women.
...and I am not bagging on the girls in NCAA softball. They would kick my arse all over the field.

I completely understand the difference, that is a inane comment.
I can easily say you guys no nothing about softball. You don't even know that the movement of a fastpitch is just as important as in baseball. It's called a rise up, drop screw, and all depends on the how the pitcher grips it just like baseball.
Here is a sports science article and the differences and similarities of hitting both.
Dare you to read and watch it!

Please tell me you can see the difference in the two. A bigger ball with no seams, thrown from a closer distance, with an underhanded motion is not going to move as much as a baseball. I never said softball pitches had no movement, so please don't try to put words in my mouth, thanks

Now I know you don't know a single thing about softball! Softballs have seams, don't know where you got that information!

You asked how much movement. Take a look at these strike out pitches by Montana Foutes that has the best rise ball in college and a drop curve that fall into dirt.
