Those links compare Huntsville against a state average. Since Huntsville is one of the largest cities in the state, those numbers would skew higher. The key is to compare Huntsville's data with similar sized southern cities.
There are no real large cities in Alabama, so violent crime probably should not be 3-4 times the National average.
It’s just very surprising that it’s so high. I’d have never expected it because all you hear are good things about the place. Most places I’ve lived you can avoid certain areas and be fine and I’d expect it to be the same in Huntsville, but the data online doesn’t really show that crime is localized and something you can avoid. I work for the govt and Huntsville has an abundance of jobs in my field. I’m just very concerned about the crime now and if I should move there.

i just scanned, briefly, at chattanoogas crime stats. chattanooga is basically higher, percentage wise. but they have about 20k less residents. heres what i'm getting at. are the high percentages skewed due to population. the less population, the higher the percentage, even tho the actual numbers are fairly low. they base it on per 100k in the population. so 22 murders per 100k in a 197k total population shows way higher than 50 per 100k in a 1 million total population. right?
i'm no mathematician, at all and ive never played one on tv. but hey, someone can correct me and let me know how bad wrong i am.

Now I know you're trolling. Huntsville is 60% larger than the biggest city in the state where you live, and you're trying to compare data to a bunch of tiny rural towns with 2,000 people (which, ironically, is where you pretended you wanted to live). You need to take your bullshite somewhere else.

You shouldn't. Huntsville is a horrible place full of horrible people. You'd hate it there.
