Ah man, Blaze (That 110 lbs pit bull) has been gone since 2010. I still miss him. Even my buddies and parents tell stories about him all the time. I have an 8 year old pointer and got a Rhodesian Ridgeback quarantine puppy back in April. So sorry you lost yours. They are little furry family members. I applied for access to the ITAT board. It would be good to reconnect.

We are not exactly a tourist type town. We have low crime for a city our size and this area is a good place to raise children. But we are not an "exciting" city so to speak.

What part? I do a fair amount of work in the TN counties that border to the north of Huntsville (Lawrence, Lincoln, Moore, etc). It seems like all my clients go to Huntsville for basically everything

Plus it’s right down the road from Nashville. That’s where you can go for weekend excitement.
It's close, but it's a good 1:45-2:00 hour drive to downtown Nashville from Huntsville. Probably closer to Chattanooga and Birmingham honestly.

Years ago when I was in the Air Force, I was given the option of Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Al or Vietnam.

I picked Da Nang for safety.

In the early 90's when I was getting ready to leave for basic training I worked as a security guard in the AT&T building in downtown Montgomery. My only job was escorting female employees to their cars. That position was created because it was very needed. Downtown isn't like that anymore. There are some bad areas in Montgomery but you have to go to them and they aren't hard to recognize.

Unless boring is what you are after I would easily rank living in a Bham close to downtown suburb like Homewood over anything Huntsville has to offer. Birmingham is a lot of fun downtown on nights and weekends and is very safe to live in the burbs.

Meant the city of Birmingham itself. I grew up around Bham many of the towns around Birmingham are great. Just meant as far as the big cities Huntsville is the best.

Depends on how you feel about urban blight and the potential for being robbed at all times of the day or night.

When I was young, the southern bypass in Montgomery was thriving. Beginning in the mid 90s, it became a third world country. Not sure why it happened so quickly. The major mall started having trouble with the thug element and the dominos started falling I guess.

Montgomery was the only place in AL my wife said she refused to live. I hate what's happened there because I have a lot of good memories there since I grew up about 45 minutes away and it was the "big city" we'd go to...but it's no different than many other similar cities... Jackson, Baton Rouge, Little Rock, etc.

Montgomery is no different from any other city. Good parts and bad parts. Born and raised in Prattville. I traveled most southeastern states for 27 years and saw good and bad in all cities I worked in. Safest city in Alabama is Huntsville.

It's relatively safe but it's just bland and there's really not that much compared with Birmingham.

Montgomery is alive and very "happening", as you say. If you are planning a visit, my recommedation is to hang out in the Capitol Heights area of downtown Montgomery.

It's a walking paradise with sidewalks everywhere and many fine restaurants to enjoy. Leave your car at the hotel, catch a clean city bus to Capitol Heights with your family, and just spend the day walking around looking at all the old, beautiful homes.

Pack a lunch, if you aren't the restaurant type, and have a picnic at one of the beautiful and scenic parks in the area. It's an experience you or your family will not soon forget.

You must live in Madison, which considers themselves a different city, but is really a Huntsville suburb. They have bad traffic, Huntsville traffic is not that bad except for brief periods. And even then not as bad compared to similar sized cities.
