I honestly don't understand the mask thing. Unless it is of a type properly rated for viruses, it does not protect in anyway against COVID.

Because the mask isn’t supposed to protect the person wearing it. It protects everyone else from someone who doesn’t know that they’re infected.

Yes. Non-n95 masks don’t keep out the virus by itself. But it does prevent droplets from coming out of your mask and landing on things that other people will come into contact with.
