WE won. That is awesome. Enjoy it today.
If anybody didn't enjoy yesterday, that's a them problem. Our guys played exactly how they should against a team like that.

I read an article from colts writer and former Auburn beat writer Joel Erickson on Braden Smith quickly picking up the NFL OL schemes despite where he went to college. That’s never a good look when we are trying to recruit OL.
It’s a very good read mainly because Joel knew Auburn very well and he was a fair writer then. He was actually the only writer that picked Auburn against Bama in 2013.

That also applies to the WR position.

How could you expect a fan base who is a custom to winning championships to enjoy a season where their 50 million dollar head coach is running the program in the ground.

"Sorry so wordy but watching it now just made me think some. Just curious about what you think?"
I think I know where you are going and, I think you are on to something. But, the philosophical answers about sports, society, values,,, well, not a fun discussion. Go watch it play out at the peewee level and, it's downright depressing.

To play devil’s advocate here.
How much of that is due to a fan base and program that has largely been okay with being above average? I see so many arguments from Auburn fans that This is as good as our program realistically will be, because history and what not. I mean, if 8-5 becomes the acceptable standard, that will be what you achieve.
In modern day football, Auburn can be a much more dominant program than what they have achieved historically, especially with how much more open recruiting is now. There is a large portion of our fan base that seems perfectly fine with a program that is mediocre for 3-4 years with one season of threatening for the SEC and maybe more. If that is the standard you set, that’s what you will get, even if you are capable of more.

Now compare that to our top competition. I get we have OL playing and a couple even picked high, but you made my point about not preparing them because of our system. Just saying that can effect our overall OL recruiting. I’m not saying it’s the only thing. We get a top OL coach and that becomes moot.
So maybe I argued against my point of the system being the problem. Lol
We need a bad arse OL coach and we are good. Question then is, can we get one that is okay with Gus’ offense?

In a fourteen team league that is arguably the toughest in college football, when you always play one of the most demanding schedules in football, is contending every 3 to 4 years truly unacceptable, unrealistic?
I think there are two distinctly different games now. One with coaches and players and another, that is money, administrators, and wealthy boosters. It would be interesting to study to what degree the dog wags the tail or, the tail wags the dog.

When the non-contending years are 7-6 and 8-5 type years, yes.

And to answer your original question, it has become incredible hard to just watch and enjoy Auburn football. I can watch any other game and just enjoy watching football.
Watching Auburn has become a chore. Multiple factors are at play there. Partly I’ve become so invested in it both emotionally and financially that I want it to be as good as I k ow it can be. Another part is that we’ve been shown how good this staff can have teams play, and seeing them consistently look like they have no idea what they are doing is maddening.

I can understand that and I share some of the same frustrations. I guess I had an epiphany at my daughter’s volleyball that I wanted to try and just enjoy her and her team play without expectations. Try to disconnect the investment you brought up. It was difficult at times but when I was able to it was more fun.
I know it’s not exactly the same but I am going to try doing it more and see how it works. Lol

I think you get it. It’s hard to hit all angles using this format to communicate it.

I think it's perfectly realistic especially in the midst of maybe the greatest dynasty run in college football history occurring in the same state.
There's not another program in the country that has had compete against a perennial top 3 team in-state over a 10 year span and still manage to win an NC, win 2 SECCGs, and appear in 3 during that time. Most program would shite the bed in the same position and most head coaches would too. One thing I can credit Gus with is that he's not afraid of Saban unlike 99% of the coaches in nation.
You've got Bama, no description needed; UGA, who was a sleeping giant that was not performing at potential in a weak division; and LSU, who has no in-state competition, all to battle against and who I believe all have natural advantages over us. That's tough. I do think we have underperformed against them lately and would like to see that turned around.
The only thing I want is more consistency, not necessarily outright dominance. I'm all for hoping and working for Auburn to have better success but asking for 10-11 wins a season is unrealistic at the moment to me.

If you win more than 8, you are most likely contending.

That article explains exactly my thoughts on why we aren’t getting top OL recruits. These guys want to play in the NFL. It doesn’t take long for recruits to learn where to go and where not to go. It is my opinion that this will be our issue we face year after year. Can we overcome that by bringing in a top OL coach? I don’t know?

Mediocrity should never be a word Auburn accepts... the amount of time, $$$, and effort equates nothing more than upper echelon

We could definitely soften up the negative recruiting with a solid hire and fresh ideas.

This isn’t about that at all. I think it’s laughable when you or others suggest such.
Is it upper echelon or mediocrity? They aren’t the same thing.
