I'm no doctor, but upon some half-assed internet research, it seems recovery has improved dramatically for basketball players. Sometime around the turn of the century vast improvements were made to the surgery and rehab process to where some guys come back almost without missing a beat, whereas in the 80's it was a career ender for most.

Zach Lavine is first and most recent example that comes to mind.. NBA guard in his twenties who relies heavily on his athleticism to score. And despite the franchise being extra cautious with him, he was back almost to his previous form in less than a year.
