Can someone explain fishing to me?

I want to preface this by saying I like the idea of it. Love nature, I’m a bigger fan of streams versus standing bodies of water. Fly fishing looks cool. I just want a no bullshite answer on why you guys love it.

No disrespect but thats like saying why do you like music?

So many like it for the competition, so many like it for the challenge, so many for the connection with nature. For me, it was everything. I grew up hunting more than fishing but started doing big lakes when I got around 16 or so. The first time I ever rode in a power boat, I knew i would have one soon. My dad always took me in jon boats so I eventually got to get out with a friend who had a 15 foot Cimmaron boat with a 88 HP. I knew then, I would have one.

After I got married, which was very early, I bought a used 17 foot boat with 150 Evinrude. Never looked back. I think boating helped me get into competitive fishing. Now, I just use fishing to get me to my retirement.

I have always loved being on the water more than on the land so it just fit. Fishing is a very different activity. You will never, EVER, figure it out. That is why I keep going back I guess.

Also love this. You talked a lot about boats. For you, is that a big component too?

I’m not approaching this from a sceptic’s point of view. From a practical point of view there’s no question to me that there’s something to be had from it. I just want to better understand what some of those somethings are. The only fishing I’ve ever done is at the beach. I’d hook up some squid or shrimp (preferred squid, it was way more durable) and I’d catch random shite in the bayou. Also baited crab traps and sometimes that’d produce something.

Do you guys catch and release?
