I’m not sure that CMR made a mistake by going back to his alma mater to be the Head Coach. But hiring his own son as the QB coach? That was a monumental blunder that was destined to blow up the football program. Jon Richt had to have been - by a large margin - the least experienced QB coach in the Power 5.

Amazing that CMR thought that was a good idea.

I'm sure he thought that he would help coach QBs and teach his son, but that's a stupid decision. You don't hire a guy with no coaching experience to coach the most important position on the field. That was the move that showed me Richt wasn't serious about winning championships.

We all know Richt's mistakes hiring coaches and being too loyal. Look how long he held onto Willie Martinez. If he nearly refused to fire his best friend, there's no way he's going to fire his son.

It's almost xmas. So try to not be stupid again, if possible.

Make it a New Year's resolution. At least give it a try.

He might do well ... might, at a place like VSU if Kerwin Bell moved along, or possibly D-III instead.

Richt thinks 8 wins is a great year and everyone should be happy with it.

I can’t believe Miami let him hire his son. It’s gross negligence for them to allow that within their program.

With regards to Richt, I just don’t think winning football games is all that important to him anymore. That’s fair from a personal perspective, but he is paid millions of dollars to win football games for Miami.

And someone please double-check me on this, but around the 1:48 mark it sounds very much like he broke the huddle by saying: "1-2-3 titties."

I think a lot of you are mistaking competitive with open display of emotion. Richt is actually a very competitive person. I’m pretty sure he thought he could get his son some OTJT. What he did on the field really has no bearing on his ability to be a coach. The risk for Richt doing it is essentially this thread. If things go bad, it will be an easy target for criticism. I think Richt’s biggest issue is he assumed he could come in there and recruit like Miami did in the 80s. Between the previous “issues” they had and the loss of their brand, recruiting is not as easy for them as it used to be. This dovetail”s with the UGA sleeping giant philosophy when Richt was here. Richt recruited ‘well’, but the strength of the brand here helped him. If he can recruit consistently like he did here, he will be a 10 win coach in the ACC and slip into the ACC championship on occasion. If he fails to recruit well, he will continue to slip and eventually lose his job and he will be blamed for every decision he made.

He did pull a top 10 class last year and even Al Golden
was pulling top 15 classes there. He should be signing top 10 classes on geography alone. There's not another P5 school in the country with as much talent within an hours drive of the campus. Maybe Diaz was the reason for their success last year but CMR just doesn't seem like he has the desire for the recruiting grind.

Did he really recruit that consistently here the 2nd half of his career? Pretty good case could be made that
he didnt.Look at his classes between '10 and '13...we fell way off when it came to producing NFL draft picks (13 total and it put us in a tie with Missouri for 7th place in the SEC) UF produced double the amount and Bama had 30 in that same time frame.

Yes our recruiting picked up in '14 and '15 but was probably due to CJP more than anything else.

I believe Saban and his "process" permanently changed CFB recruiting and it's something CMR never caught up with.

This is fair, but I don’t think he hires his son if winning is priority #1.
