Well, its actually not in the middle of the stands, but in front of the stands.
And by the 1970's it wasn't there at all.
But my guess would be that flood lamps that covered an entire field back then weren't as powerful as future lamps would be, so they had to be closer to the field to be effective.
Or it could be that Columbus was cheap and bought crappy lights, which isn't an unreasonable option either.

I don’t think it’s lights. Loudspeaker maybe?

The bulbous thing on the left? That's gotta be a light. The cylindrical thing on the right looks like some kind of transformer box usually found on power poles.
Speakers back then were usually wired and mounted directly to (sometimes on top of) the announcers booth.
Now that I think of it, they likely didn't have stadium lights in Columbus Memorial Stadium back in the 40's and 50's and played all games in daylight (as Shug wisely noted that all college games should be played), so I have no idea what its for or why its there. A light for stadium maintenance, maybe?
But, as Aubie originally pointed out, that's a crappy place to put a light pole. Columbus has always been good at doing things on the cheap.
