When I was a little shite and he and Bobby Franklin were splitting time at QB, he would always take a minute to speak to me on the field after games. He'd smile and say " You're that kid from the Delta."

Bye, Dog.

Will people change suits in the middle of the funeral?

This is shocking, just heard this! I had no idea he'd had a stroke. This is sad news, I kinda liked Brewer. RIP

RIP. My family sure did -- and does -- love them some Billy Brewer. More than Vaught himself, in fact, because Billy was a true Ole Miss man through and through. I'm more of a Cutcliffe fan, myself, and they accept that...just so long as I don't go trying to compare the two. They'd consider that just plain disrespectful to Billy.

God bless him. He had some good teams in Oxford. Whipped our arse in '92 over there.

Billy Brewer was simply a legend. Growing up in the early 90s, he was the first head coach I ever knew. He was a huge Ole Miss Rebel, and I hate that the University did him wrong for so long. If you thought the rivalry between Mullen and Freeze was heated, the Brewer vs. Sherrill era was so much more intense.

The guy was also probably the all-time best sideline dresser. The Game hats, red pants, Billy Dog was fratty.

One of the last times my grandfather ever went grocery shopping, he ran into Billy at a grocery store in Oxford, and they literally carried their conversation from the produce aisle to the cash register to Billy’s car for another 20 minutes to half hour. He did a lot of good and bad things as the coach of the program, and he’s the first coach I’ll ever remember. The Golden Flake ads alone will probably always be stuck in my mind. RIP

Damn ... Billy was a good guy. Knew him and his brother both back in my Olive Branch days. Sad to read this. Last time I saw him was at Coach Dietzel's funeral.

We're all getting old I guess.

He loved to fish. We fished Arkabutla and Sardis together, several times with a mutual friend of ours, and he loved being out on the water ... whether we were catching fish or not.

He bought my used truck ... later told me he drove it for years, best truck he ever owned he said. I had run into him out on Covington Pike used truck shopping while I was new truck shopping and he decided he wanted that truck of mine so, rather than trade it, I sold it to Billy and we continued to use that truck to pull his boat to the lake.

Damn, just damn. They're all dying. All my old buddies ... Coach Carlen, Coach Dietzel and now Billy. About to head out to take my wife to Mother's Day dinner ... but I am genuinely sad. He was such a good guy. Lived a good, honorable, life. Loved his Rebs, loved Ole Miss.

The 80s don't seem like that long ago, but I guess they were.

I know I talk a lot of shite about Luke being hired because he loved Ole Miss, but if there was ever a man who loved Ole Miss, it was Billy Brewer. Outside of Vaught, that man is far and away our best coach. If he had not been fired, I think we would have won the SEC under him a few times and Ole Miss football would be a lot different today than it currently is.

What got him fired was pretty damn dirty though and I don't think there will ever be an Ole Miss fan who will be mad at him for it

While I never met him. One of my best friends growing up, his Dad was one of the big shots in the maintenance dept. @ Southeastern Louisiana for many years. He knew Billy very well when he was head coach here. He always spoke about what a great guy he was along with a great coach.
