Savannah is awesome. Lots of good restaurants and a ton of history. Quite a few haunted homes in old town, and many a pirate was said to have spent time there.
No Mardi Gras, but they do St. Patrick’s like no other.
They have a lot of nature and sea life all over the islands. When I was at GSU, we spent many weekends on Tybee Island. But there are many other islands as well depending on your tastes and bank account.

I am from Mobile and live in Daphne now. I also lived in Savannah for 3 years. Your biggest concern will probably be schools. I would start your research there. As others have said, they are very similar towns with the river and proximity to the beach. Savannah definitely holds the advantage with attractions,history, and old south charm.
